I can sympatise here. My 2011 Puma has an older version of "Lane assist technology". I can testify as to how annoying it can be. Mine cannot be disabled either but thankfully it only functions when the wife is on board.

The trouble is that I suspect a significant proportion of their customer base cannot drive, and the more that technology replaces ability the worse it will get. |

Seeing how people were driving on the A1 and A14 yesterday, I think some people have forgotten how to drive and will definitely need Lane Assist. Jumped ship to reliability - Mitsubishi L200

Well if so, that may be why it’s not a feature that can be permanently disabled by the user..?

The "intelligent" stuff in a Grand Cherokee, Hired, nearly caused a major collision on the A38 between Plympton and Plymouth a couple of years ago. The flat tyre sensors decided that the one I was driving was unsafe to continue and slammed on the brakes without warning, the skill of the 40 ton artic driver that was behind me was amazing, he managed to avoid hitting me, vehicles in the out side land and the central reservation barriers. I got a barrage of abuse from him as I sat there in shock listening to the auto voice thing telling me the vehicle was unsafe to drive. The local police arrived and I explained what had happened, four Police officers, recovery driver and myself poured over the handbook trying to find a way of releasing the electric handbrake without success. Turns out that a batch of the vehicles had a fault with the "Intelligent" stuff instead of gradually slowing down the vehicle it would just slam the brakes on and lock the handbrake until some gismo was plugged in to tell the car the wheel had been changed. Don't make old people mad. We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to  us off.

It was also Jeep’s over the air electronic updating systems that were found to be able to be hacked remotely when few other marques could be. It meant that your Jeep’s controls could be remotely taken over by persons unknown.......... even more scary! I'm afraid that this is one area where LR just don't cut the mustard. Not all driving aids are bad, but they can be badly implemented.
My daily-driver for the last four years has been a Mercedes S-Class. It has a raft of driving systems and they all work extremely well. There are YouTube videos of the W222 S-Class driving itself 100% autonomously in testing, based on these systems, but this capability is currently disabled. I sometimes do 400+ miles in a long day and have been saved a couple of times by the emergency braking assist. Completely my fault for following too closely to the car in-front, driving too fast and/or not paying attention. I borrowed a D5 for three weeks and found even basic things like the active headlights were not as slick as in the Mercedes. After a while these became annoying. The other thing is that Mercedes acknowledge that you don't always want a car that can drive itself, so there is a little control panel to the right of the steering wheel with physical buttons to switch individual assists off. OP: the reason for posting this was simply to point out that not all driving aids are bad and at the price point that the Defender occupies there is an expectation that they should be well implemented and tested. Not be a hinderance that you need to disable. |

Miles, no problem - I too have owned other cars where electronic systems are much better integrated/ more user friendly than the way that JLR do things. Seems a bit like Boris’s “World beating” C-19 track and trace app............. it doesn’t work the way that the end user would like it to....but the end user knows nothing and has to bow to the “experts” way and others do it better (Apple and Google in this case!)
