Underbody of New Defender
as a long time owner of Landrovers both Discovery and 110 and driver of a range of vehicles due to my job i find the underbody pics of the new defender a bit of a shock. I can tell you the underbody will not last long in punishing 4x4 environments. I wish they had of done some testing in Australia on the punishing corrugations of Cape York or central Australia. By comparison some of the vehicles i drive as part of work (Pajero Sport - Toyota Fortuner - 200 Series Landcruiser - Nissan Patrol)

The new defender as people have highlighted is a medium duty 4x4. Hope the CV's and diffs are strong as the suspension articulation will lead to a lot of shock loading thru transmission.

Market in Australia cant get enough of dual cab trucks and medium priced medium and heavy duty 4x4. Landrover should have seen this market and not built yet another derivative of their existing platforms.

i have driven my MY10 Range Rover Sport up to the Tip of Cape York and back via the OTT and PDR, as well as some of
the less populated parts of NSW/VIC and the standard components copes easily with the corrugations and the
ever varying terrains that gets thrown at it.

It seems a bit of an aussie urban myth that D3/D4/RRS are not up to what Australia can throw at them. I only just
changed the factory fitted upper and lower control arms at 125K KM's last October.. How many Toyota's and Nissans
go out stock?? it seems a right of passage here for people to swap their suspension out for "tougher " shocks Laughing

If the suspension is more robust as they claim on the new Defender, fitted with larger and more resilient components,
then i would suspect it will last even longer than the 9.5 years i got out of mine Whistle

Aftermarket suppliers such as TJM, ARB etc will be queuing up to supply more robust under body protection plates
i see no difference from what the majority of Landcruiser, Prado and Patrol owners fit to their brand spanking new wagons
when they turn up.. yet another pommie bar steward down under

Good point Zilch,
the new unibody LandRovers seem perfectly designed for city people who might go on a holiday

I honestly think it will be existing and past disco 3/4 owners that will be the main purchasers.
That seemed to be the comment from a few LR dealers, those who could not make the leap
to the D5. Plenty of Disco and RRS owners in Oz who participate in LR owner clubs who get out
and about in the wilds Thumbs Up yet another pommie bar steward down under
