I must say that from this angle, with a very slight slope to the bonnet, the shoulder lines on the front wings and the oversized bumper, It looks more G-Wagen than 90, but still a whole lot better than the JLR pretender-defender.

It looks a bit like a Lenco Bearcat

I hadn't looked at it that way around ~ it does make sense

So this appears to have turned into a red herring?

But what about that box underneath?

Good question.

Nobody got any thoughts?

I'm going to guess that it's some form of test equipment - strain guage perhaps used in conjunction with a trailer to measure forces on the chassis or rear axle.

Looks like they might have a 4-link anti-squat set up as used in some Baja and desert racers, plus some US muscle and drag cars.
