Ok, thanks Corgi.
So you know where I’m starting from. We have an old fashioned gas fired gravity fed system, header tanks in the loft and separate hot water tank etc. The boiler is controlled by Honeywell 24 hour timer that, whilst you can override the hot water and heating separately, the timer function controls them both as one. There is one room thermostat in the hall that is connected back to the boiler by 2 wires. Can you tell me if I have got this right? The Hive Hub, is connected to my broadband router and is just the system’s connection to the ‘net to allow app control etc? The Hive receiver replaces my Honeywell timer completely and would just have case of switching the wiring from the timer to the Hive receiver. The Hive thermostat replaces my 2 wire one, but is completely wireless. So I just disconnect the old thermostat wiring at the boiler end. Assume Hive stat doesn’t need power (unlike the the Nest). Des the Hive system operate over my Wifi, or has its own wireless signals to talk to each other? 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS |

Bluest, you still wont be able to control the hot water.heating independently as its a gravity system, the two wires at the stat can be connected together as they are only there to bring the pump on, the kit comes with a transmitter that plugs into your router, this allows your new room stat to connect to the internet there are 3 boxes, the stat on your wall that has a knob you can adjust if you don't want to use your phone, transmitter connected to the hub and a receiver wired in to your system hope this hasnt made it too complicated let me know

A wireless heating thread .. count me in!
So Pete, I have system boiler, unvented tank, gold pump for secondary hot and a kitchen breakfast room with wet underfloor heating. The house has one thermostat to control radiator central heating. The kitchen has 3 thermostats to control 3 underfloor heating circuits The system has a 3 channel heating controller. One channel hot water, one for heating and one for secondary hot.. The underfloor works separately from the thermostats which are programmable. So my question is, i want wireless for heating on rads via the house thermostat. I want wireless to turn my hot water on and off and ai also want the secondary hot pump wireless. So can you get hive or similar to run a 3ch programmer or similar? Thanks  1951 80" S1 2.0

yea quite straight forward you would fit a duel channel receiver and a single channel receiver wired together to give you your 3 channels, its not that unusual

Thanks Pete. That’s a surprising limitation with the hot water control. I can control mine manually by sliding the relevant switches on my timer to do just water or just heating. It’s not a good enough timer to do it itself. Thats a poor show that the Hive can’t manage it. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS |

I think the limitation is due to it being gravity fed rather than a limitation of anything 'smart'. If you're currently able to switch on the heating without the hot water, are you sure it's gravity fed and there isn't a pump in the hot water circuit somewhere?
Our 40 year old system had gravity fed hot water. Big PITA as it meant the hot water was too hot in the winter when the heating was on. A plumber fitted a pump into the hot water circuit and now it's controllable serparately. Nothing smart going on, just a pump to control the flow of hot water. |

I have a tado system which does allow the hot water to be controlled on its own in a traditional gravity installation (40 years old). All it is doing is controlling the swith from the existing timer which in turn activates the valve ( you probably have a valve on each circuit, hot water and heating). I was an early adopter and have added the rad stats , which in general are reliable. It is linked in with voice control and when one was able to go on holiday, very useful for getting the heating on to warm the house up remotely. The proximity sensing is ok. It does turn down the hearing if you go out but doesnt sense you coming home quickly enough. It was easy enough to install. Hope that helps  Click image to enlarge |

Bluest, when you say gravity hot water are you relating to the tanks above the cylinder?
When a system is called gravity fed it traditionally means your hot water works on gravity and self circulation ie slide your programmer to H/W and just a live is sent to your boiler which fires up, heats the heat exchanger the warm water rises to your cylinder usually via 28mm pipes and the cooler water falls to the boiler. There isn’t much of an advantage to isolate the hot water from the heating, whilst your heat exchanger is hot it might as well do the hot water. The next step in an upgrade would be to fit a fully pumped kit S plan or Y plan kit. I think I may have mixed metaphors and got myself somewhat confused. What I actually meant to say is that I have a vented system, not a gravity fed system. Don’t even know what a gravity fed system is! 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

So what happens when your router is the other side of the house and the signal doesn't reach the cellar where the boilers are and the hot water is provided by an AGA?
 At least to the first two floors...

Cat5 to two separate routers with either the same or new SSIDs names.

Not wanting to derail the thread but try 8 routers at a minimum to get decent coverage
. The majority of the interior walls are heavily laden in iron and over 2ft thick in a fair portion of them. Ed

Bluest do you have any motorised valves like 2 ports or a 3 port?
