looking to the fountain of all knowledge once again.
I've got an old alloy mtb and it basically needs a full overhaul. I'm looking to take this opportunity to overhaul my other 26" mtb from 2x10 to 1x11 which I think I'm sorted with. The question is can I and how do I transfer my BB30 to the alloy frame which currently uses shimano (well actually SRAM) hollotech 2. it would appear at first I can't but after doing some reading it would appear it may well be possible after all but can't find any clear detail on this. I presume there's an external bearing set with 30mm dia hole for the bb30 shaft? clarity please |

Looks like you need something like this
https://www.sigmasports.com/item/Praxis-Wo...lsrc=aw.ds but I seem to remember that it also depends on the spindle length of the cranks - so I would check with the supplier before purchase |

hmm,
You kinda lost me but... which cranks do you want to fit in which frame? it shouldn't really be a issue as the only thing that changes is the width.. Just make sure the cranks / chain ring you plan to use sorta line up with the casette i've bodged plenty. components / pics would help. |

sorry. I loose myself most of the time. so I'm stripping a BB30 set up (2x10) and want to install that into an alloy frame that currently has a shimano type hollotech 2 bottom bracket which I believe has a shaft diameter of 22mm. so I need to increase this to 30mm. as above I think this is resolved |

Caterham - we have Hope BB’s in our round the world bikes and they have done a ‘few’ miles with out any bother.
We started with sealed Shimano BBs which were a pain after a year or so and couldn’t be adjusted, so moved to the Hope ones and were able to adjust and service on the road with much better results.. bb sorted.
but looks like I've made a school boy error. I bought a sram x0 crankset to 1x11 to match as close as possible the 2x10 xo it's going to replace. before committing to it (as they only had 32t) option I checked I could buy 36t replacement chain ring - happy days Hope do a 36t direct drive replacement chain. I know realise the hope and Sram direct drives aren't the same anyone know where I might find a SRAM 11spd 36t X0 direct drive chain ring with 0 offset? |

hmm. had a look at the convertors and probably a good idea however the direct connect looks tidier in my opinion and if I can find what I'd looking for un-necessary but a great option if needs be thank you.

well looks like I may have 'wasted' some money. don't think the 'old' bottom bracket bb30 will fit into the bsa/alloy frame with the bb30 adapters as the crank shaft will be too short?
anyhow for the immediate issue. the new crank set didn't get supplied with any bb seals. neither did the old one have any? rather surprised? it does however have 6 perspex shims which I presume are shims and not seals? there are also what appear to be two stainless steel washers / shims with a small section cut out. there doesn't appear to be any instructions on what does and doesn't need to be installed etc? the only thing I've found any info on is the plastic thing for pre-loading? any expertise out to assist please? |

The lack of standardisation of all these standards is a nightmare
Depending on the age of the alloy frame, the width may not necessarily fall into today’s MTB ‘norm’ of 73mm; which may then explain why your BB 30 crank is too short. Can only hark back to the days when everything was Raleigh When I changed the bearings on my son’s Specialized PF30 (BB30 derivative), I sourced some SST bearings from a local bearing supplier, reused the existing (not very substantial) seals and moved a shim over to the drive side to centralise the 1x chainwheel better with the rear cassette/derailleur. This resulted in around 1/4” sideways play on the BB that I adjusted away with the preload adjuster. I don’t think it’s absolutely vital to get things lined up 100%. I’d just try to put it together with the supplied shims or reuse the old ones till it’s in line and then take up any slack with the preload adjuster. 2012 110 XS SW Orkney Grey 2003 D2 Td5 Black [SOLD] |

it would appear the bb shell width will be 98mm once the external bb30 bearings have been fitted which I think is going to be a tad too wide for the standard bb30 crankset I presume the crank is permanently fixed to the one crank arm and I can't therefore simply by a new crank which seems like a damn shame |

Progress Now with the old square taper crank (or god forbid, cotter pins), you wouldn’t have had an issue. 2012 110 XS SW Orkney Grey 2003 D2 Td5 Black [SOLD] |
