What was going on with the standard of driving in that video? I think it would have gone up a whole lot easier with a driver that had a less binary approach to the controls.

I think the car making a meal of it was a different car to the first one we were in, with no locking rear diff, unless the computer decided a locked rear diff wasn't needed there.

It does show the fundamentally different approach to getting traction that LR have had to follow with the independent suspension. Despite what they say, there isn't the real world articulation of a solid axle, so they have to use still pretty clumsy traction control to grab spinning wheels all the time, which seems to make for jerky progress. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

The old Defender and it's earlier incarnations was designed to do a job and was designed accordingly. The new vehicle was designed not to be like the earlier Defenders yet to do the same job. The vehicle architecture of the new vehicle cannot do the same job as the out going model so technology was added to make it do the same job.
Take out the technology of the new vehicle and the vehicle itself will not be able to accomplish much in an off road situation. It's design per se is not what you would design for it to be an off road vehicle on it's on. It needed the technology to make a non off road vehicle behave as an off road vehicle.
The design of the out going model ment that it could be an off road vehicle without the fancy technology. It was designed that way. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Do we have anyone in the forum who can translate what's being said on the video? I'm curious to know who it is doing the driving/guiding.

It had occurred to me that if it was in any way official, as in JLR distributor or dealer, it may get pulled if Corporate get to see it?

I test drove a D200 SE Gangsta Edition today...........








D200 is only just adequate for such a heavy vehicle and likely to get burned off at the lights by grannies in Kia Picantos
Apart from that it is a very impressive drive, once up and going it’s fine very smooth and very quiet but it’s difficult to get used to no dead right arm (it’s actually difficult to rest your right arm on the door casing because the car is so wide!) and driving RRS/FFRR style with the cubby box lid in exactly the right place to use as an arm rest. I would say too that the Clearview Rear View mirror is a “must have” item, visiblity through the forest of head restraints and the rear dorm window being blocked by the spare wheel is worse than on either Evoque that I owned.
Edit - I’ve just noticed in the photo of the rear that despite privacy glass you can still see in through the rear window - look like LR has moved away from using the usual one way limo tinting. Also the boot roller blind thing is a pretty flimsy mesh affair rather than a Plastic pull out roller blind Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come
2020 D240 1st Edition in Pangea Green with Acorn interior. Now gone - old faithful, no mechanical issues whatsoever ever but the leaks and rattles all over the place won’t be missed!

it will be good to see more videos like this of uninitiated driving it side by side the old one. One of the new defenders made it look much easier than the other which just shows it's not all point and go as much as land rover try to tell you. Kind of reminded me when i first got my D3, I use our cars to get across paddocks with trailers i got it well and truly stuck first time and was quite disappointed i eventually learnt to let the car do its thing rather than drive it how I would in my previous 4x4s. 110 MY23.5 X Dynamic HSE

interesting about the engine, i'm hoping my dealers demo is the d240 I've had v6/8s for the last 20 years so quite wary of the prospect of having to drop to a 4 pot. Especially as i tow regularly. I have been talking to the dealer about an X predominantly to get the bigger engine but i the bang for buck on the X is really not stacking up for me i just want a decent engine. 110 MY23.5 X Dynamic HSE

Wet grass has caught many a Disco owner out Laughing

Going on the LR Experience half day is a must, it won’t make you an expert but it gives you a better appreciation of the vehicle and it’s capabilities. I’ve done god knows how many inc the full day with the Defender each time learning something new.

Yes I’ve done Dunkeld many times, Eastnor Castle, Luton Hoo and Solihull LRE’s and there is something new to learn every time. So it looks like he's agreeing that it was mostly down to the driver, and that afterwards 2 other drivers made it up without struggling so much. --

A nasty big chunk of metal in that tyre. I think that bit plastic they were poking on the front is supposed to be removed prior to any serious off roading. The white one no longer has that problem Laughing
