Rear door spare wheel carrier (I want to cry)

Sorry for so long post but i need to discharge all my angry with the dealer...

Yesterday night when I open the rear door two big washers falling down from inside the door. I was corious about from were are comming. I check today almost all the Microcat and the Workshop manual without success Sad . But today in the afternnon I noticed heavy vibration in the back. I went to check in the rear when I was in the parking lot of a departemant store and I put my hand in the spare and was completely loose Shocked Shocked

A brief checking shows that one bolt of the spare wheel carrier were missing and the other 2 in the same side was absolutely loose (the washers comming from there !!). In the other side one of the bolts was starting to losse. Under this conditions I fear to reach home without the risk of produce a huge accident if the spare wheel falling down in the street.

So, I take out the spare, put inside the Defender and continue to my home. Tomorrow I have an appointment with the dealer to sort the problem with the differential lever and some strange noice in the clutch (again)

The rear door was changed by the dealers around 5 month ago due a crack in the aluminium sheet.

Really I feel quire worry about the service of my dealer and unfortunately is the only one in Chile Big Cry Big Cry Big Cry

Try using nylon bolts, or how do u call them in english, once secured they dont rattle loose, ive had a few bolts coming loose and i replace them, if i tell the dealer fix it he just puts new ones in who will ratlle loose again Rolling Eyes Laughing

Dgardel,

The crack appeared in the low corner of the window at the hinge side at 15.000 km use. The extension was around 5 to 8 cm.

Well,

I just trying to appoint a meeting with the dealer General Manager to explain how dangerous was this issue.
According to the Workshop Head the problem was the lack of chemical lock in the nuts.

Microcat said that nutlock (with nylon) should be there. Any idea?

The nut MUST be autolock type with a nylon ring on the upper part or nurmal nut with autolock "cream" (loctite)





may be the mechanic "forgot" it and:
1. he used normal nut or
2. he reused the old one (they MUST CHANGED every time), probably the real situation.

Mine had "nyloc" nuts, but not much spare thread poking out. Maybe the bolts were too short, the door a little thicker (for whatever reason) or the washers too thick. This would obviously result in less engagement of the nylon part.

Swing-away wheel carrier is the only solution IMHO.

The main bolts are visible (on the RHS body and chassis). There are still bolts on the door but they take much less weight. If the door bolts failed, the carrier would just swing about more but still remain attached.

I'd demand to see the dealer - it doesn't sound like they're doing the basics! One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS

Hi there!

Swing away carrier is already requested (hopefully will be installed next week).
Will be installed in other workshop specialist in Series and old defenders (not a LR dealer)

My tought is that they use the same autolock nuts instead new ones as dgardel said Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad .

This door have an intensive use, my 2 boys use it every day to come in and out from the defender, thats may be one of the reasons to have this kind of problem and is the reason to decide to install a swing away carrier.

Really I can endure technical failures like a pump, gears, etc were the persosn are not in real danger. But this is a safety issue that can produce a serius injury to others.
