We have just got a supply of Ram Mounts for iPads and iPhones

Possible solution includes an 18" flex mount, seat bolt anchor, grab rail mount, suction mount etc. If you want to see some we will be displaying them on our stand A3 at Billing.

Just got this on eBay. It's well made, strong and holds the iPad firmly. I can't recommend it enough.

That is certainly a cheap option, but I personally would have serious reservations about it.

I have had suction mounts fall off with just standard sat navs on. I personally do not like the idea of £500 of iPad hitting the floor.

What about the legality of it? Andrew S got his wrists slapped and his did not obscure as much of the windscreen as that mounting position would. See HERE

The highway code states

Quote:

windscreens and windows MUST be kept clean and free from obstructions to vision

Assuming it is mounted in zone B i.e. passenger wiper area of windscreen then the following is reason for MOT failure

Quote:

In the remainder of the swept area: Zone B
d. damage not contained within a 40mm diameter circle, or
e. a windscreen sticker or other obstruction encroaching more than 40mm

OK that is for the MOT and not for driving. Whilst I do not know the legality of actually driving with an iPad mounted on the windscreen I personally would be worried about loss of vision through the windscreen.

I think Brendan is over-reacting a little (a lot) possible due to selling Ram Mounts??

On a clean glass...properly suctioned, suction mounts can be very powerful...although i admit to buying the double suction mount just in case, the 2 being individually as strong. Clean windscreen and mount suction surface is fine...certainly withstood the action thrown at it from us.

Position wise - again a little over-reaction - the photo'd position isnt great but with the suction mounts the advantage is you can move them!! Our's we positioned a little lower to avoid the vents and across to the passenger side a little more (although its difficult to tell from the photo) - there was no noticeable loss in vision, in fact a down side to the RAM mounts is often to see the ipad for navigation you have to look away from the road - possibly far more dangerous, or at least the RAM mounts are more difficult to position in the correct way, and often take valuable space from the passenger (already limited). Mike

Please credit Brendan with better selling techniques than raising valid points.

I also would not risk my iPad on suction mount whilst off road, that is why I have got a fixed dash mount.

I have however ordered the mount shown as a mount for when I am out in the wife's car. Although the tom Tom never stays up with suction, but we will see.

Thanks Andy.

Mike I am a bit sad that you think I am over reacting and that you think my comments are because we sell Ram Mounts.

Having used Tom Toms on suction mounts, Garmins on suction mounts and weighted dash top mount plus Navmans on a suction mount.. No I am not a fan of suction mounts as on various occassions they have all come off. Have experienced them falling off when stationary as they experienced temperature rises due to solar gain. My personal preference is for the Garmin on the weighted dashboard mount

We have a 2" Ram mount in our red 110 for the tough book. That intrudes more into passenger space then the Ram flex mount and iPad. Even with the joints tighten up with the 'spanner' on corrugated roads the tough book would slowly move downwards intruding even more into the passenger space. Barbara prefers the flex mount and iPad to the tough book and 2" mount for space requirement. If you have an automatic Defender then you can position the iPad roughly where the radio is.

As for taking your eyes off the road to look at ANY navigational device then it is dangerous full stop.

I believe in Spain (but am willing to be corrected) it is illegal to have any sat nav device which the driver can see the map on. Audio directions are fine however. Much safer from a road safety point of view.

Well i will stand by anyone who sells a product has a vested interest in theirs over another...and often (particularly in the land rover world) the "we used it in the desert therefore it must be the best" argument is banded around.

If you want to see suction in action look how they lift in windscreens to cars or move big sheets of glass around factories etc etc.

Ok some of the tom tom mounts that stick on have problems as they dont create the vacuum (ones without levers) - but its equally because people dont clean there windscreen (you should always wipe it clean) and keep the suction pad clean - to a degree you should clean the contact often.

Like i mentioned we have a double suction - but still it survived tracks and the third world Scottish highland roads.

Anyone on here taken one to a desert Rolling Eyes Mike

Pandora's Box! Personally the suction cup on the bracket I have bougth appears tight - i have pulled on it - because i don't want a cracked iPad screen either. As for positioning, the photo is just to show you guys another bracket available and some (hopefully) helpful pictures.

As for me using this set up, it's more likely to be occassional use. If/when i find enough time and money to drive to Cape Town, i'll carefully assess it's suitablility for the job Wink
