2.2 ECU Swap?
Hello
I’m in need of Help, I have a Defender 90 2.2 tdci 2015 model year. It has developed a sort of rough running problem. When you turn it on the engine note is very loud and rough (however I doesn’t seem as if the idle is to high). When driving the defender again It has the same issue of it seems the cars engine isn’t in sink. A way to put it is, the car feels as if it’s in low range (it feels heavy) and I can confirm it isn’t in low range. Between all of this it does also have a tappety noise which comes in.
I should add I do know that the Pumas are noisy/not refined, but I’m comparing this to another 2.2 tdci 2016 edition I have which is by far smoother.
It has been tuned and de-egr’d,
The correct low sap oil is also being used.
I did want to carry out an injector pilot learn on it, however on my Hawkeye it doesn’t have the option, it only allows you to maintain the DPF and EGR, Unlike the 2.4 which it gives me the option to do the injector learn.
Any advice would be helpful, I have cleaned the MAP and MAF sensors as well.
Kind regards

Hi Guys,
Looking for advice as I understand not many people has the above issue previously, as well as the above I also have multiple other engine running issues.
To check if it’s all down to the previous remap done, could I simply swap the ecu for a temporary one for test purposes? As i do also have another 2.2tdci defender with DPF, with standard map and would help to get to the bottom of the issue.
However I understand the injectors are coded and I believe it’s interlinked to the alarm and immobiliser etc?

Any help/advice would be helpful

Have you discussed the problem with the people who remapped the ECU? Defender 90XS SW

Hi
Thank you for your message, yes I have (I don’t wish to publish the company/name to prevent any negative publicity for them). They are being quite slow to reply etc though, and I thought I’d use it on the car for temporary (hour or so) if it would be okay to swap them. To see if the one from the defender which I know is working 100%, has what type of affect on the one with the problems. If so, I can push onto the tuner to either help resolve it or simply remove the tune.
However without doing something like this, it’s hard to blatantly say it’s the tune.
My main concern being if I lock or damage the ecu or anything In the process?

take it to a good independent 4x4 garage and pay them to fault find .quicker and easier and if its one of teh common faults they should know how to sort it

or remove the tune and start from there

Definitely remove the tune if you can and see if the problem is still there. I know the remote tunes save a backup. But I assume you went to a centre and had it tuned there.

Swapping an ECU is not as easy as swapping the floor mats.
You'll have to renew the stored parameters.
