Wiring Anderson connector from winch?

Morning all.

After having to give several jump starts in recent weeks (great how people assume that because you have a Defender, you don’t mind giving a jump start, changing a wheel etc etc) I’ve decided to fit an Anderson connector and I’ll probably put it on the front bumper for convenience.

I have read Leeds’ excellent guide on the forum but was wondering if I could take the power and -ve connections from my winch, rather than run it all the way back to the battery. The advantage being less cable and it already has an isolator switch in the cab.

Yes. I did similar on my tdci when I ran cables into engine bay, in, and out of Anderson connector then to the winch. I preferred the idea of the connections being under the bonnet. That way they are protected from the elements, no one can back power the winch or try vehicle, and less obvious.

Also has the advantage that you can easily power your winch externally if the need arises.

Cheers Andy, so does that mean you’ve got an Anderson under the bonnet and you can swap your winch or jump leads or whatever,depending on need?

I have a set inside the rear door, works well for jump start or powering trailer winch Cheers

Hmmm, this gets better - so for this to work, I’d just splice the power and -ve off the winch connections and both would be energised - or not - from the switch in the cab?

Blackwolf - with this arrangement, would I still be able to jump my wagon from someone else’s if I needed to?

I did think about that, but it’s quite ‘busy’ inside my back door as it is

Hmmm, I just read that back....it’s all getting a bit Carry On in the Defender.

I mean there’s speakers and seats and 12v sockets already

Yes. To use the winch from your own vehicle battery or to jump start (either your own or another vehicle) switch on the winch isolator. To power your winch from another vehicle just connect jump leads without switching on the isolator.
