There is a slot in drop arm and a hole in the steering box to accept a stud/pin to align. 1999 Defender TD5 110

Not all boxes have the centring bolt feature. If yours doesn't have , you have to find the centre position by counting the number of rotations of the input from lock-to-lock and then going to the halfway point.
