I’m looking at this on eBay - the trader seems to be known in the forums but when I did a check on insurance the number plate came up as a different model. Is this a scam, a vehicle mocked up as an SVX or a stolen vehicle with fake plates?
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/283846321729 It’s a good looking truck, but prices seems a bit low looking at other sites. I’m new to world of defenders so not sure on what pricing should be for different years/editions. Appreciate any thoughts or tips on what to look for when buying. Thanks, Sam |

It could be the registration database that is wrong, I suppose, but how likely is that?

If it is a real a SVX it is heavily modified for sure. The pictures show the following.
The stickering on the body panels look real, but they can be dealer ordered separately. The side steps have the correct anti-slip tops, but the side steps themselves on the SVX were grey. The front side repeaters are the correct SVX version. The front underbody shield is not SVX. The bonnet Land Rover lettering and the side SVX emblems seem the correct version. But the front black radiator and light surrounds are aftermarket and then painted black. With a real SVX this was all silver, including the Land Rover oval which with all aftermarket fronts, including from Land Rover themselves, had a green oval. Inside there is a double din now, black, the original center dashboard cover was not double din and silver colour. One thing which the interior dash picture does not show is the very top of the dash. There should be the support and connector for a Garmin 750. The Garmin 750 is standard factory equipment on the SVX, and the sound comes via a dedicated built in extra speaker behind the dash. The genuine SVX Pioneer radio is also replaced here. It originally had 7 speakers including the subwoofer under the cubby. Inside the SVX cubby should be the command for the subwoofer settings. The rear lights are not all original anymore. They all had white lenses on the SVX, lights brand is Le Perei. Here on this one surely the tail/stop lamps have been replaced by red lenses versions, and the turn signal on the SVX was with an incandescent bulb which here seems replaced by a cheaper LED version. On this truck here, only the red stop/tail lamps look like they could be Le Perei LED, the turn signals and the reverse and fog lamps definitely look a different brand. Inside, the steering wheel could be genuine SVX, the cubby is genuine SVX, the gearshift knob is genuine SVX, but the transfer shift knob is a cheap plastic version. Originally this was the same metal as the gearshift knob. The front seats have nothing to do with the genuine SVX Recaros. The rear seats are also not SVX, but standard cloth in the middle. Note that on the SVX all seats are partly leather, partly cloth, but the cloth is of a different quality with little Land Rover ovals woven in. I’m not going into detail of the wheels, front winch, rear bumper, and many other. Either this is a genuine SVX which has been heavily modified, or it is a normal black truck which as good as possible has been made a lookalike. In either case, it raises a bit of a flag with me. This gives a guide to what it would have been as new.......
https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-review/land-...fender-svx For me personally if your going to pay a premium for a special edition then it needs to be mint and factory standard otherwise it is just another Defender and as such requires no premium - regardless of what you choose then you need to purchase based on condition..... |

To me it just all looks wrong - its got too many bits bolted onto it to try & make it look like something it's not & where have the wheels gone? If you're genuinely interested in it then spend £20 on an HPI check & see what it comes back as. If the car is local to you go & have a look at it & take a note of the VIN number - it's in 3 places, on a tag in the near side bottom of the windscreen, on a plate riveted to the top of the brake servo bracket & stamped into the front chassis leg in the offside front wheel arch. Check all 3 match, and indeed are there, and put the VIN number into the HPI check as well. As others have said, you could also ask a dealer to check if the car is an SVX once you have the VIN number.

On a basic check it does come up as a SVX but soft top so heavily modified to say the least! Cheaper tax bracket though.

Assuming that it was a 60th to start with, someone has certainly gone to a lot of trouble to wreck it and turn it into something hideous!
Apart from the ugliest front end outside of Kahn, the paintwork on the side panels looks appalling (check the photo through the open driver's door), and the roofrack has the flimsiest legs I think I've ever seen. It needs a lot of sorting out, and the cost of returning this thing to something approaching its original level of distinction would be considerable. I would not walk away! That being said, it is horses for courses and if it floats you boat you could try using the state of it to negotiate on the price. |

Wow, thanks everyone for the detailed input. I have asked the dealer some more questions on VIN numbers etc and will see what their response is, or if they come back at all, but I think likely I won’t go for this one and will instead look for something a bit more standard. It is pretty certain from what you have spotted that whatever it is, it is not quite what it makes out to be.
It’s interesting that the basic check carried out above did bring it back as an SVX - the thing that raised a flag for me was when I checked what I might pay for insurance and the registration came back as: 2009 LAND ROVER DEFENDER HARD TOP 90 STD, 2402cc Diesel, Manual, Gross Weight: 2400kg, Payload: 650kg (LC09JVJ). Another SVX from a different dealer website on the same check (‘comparethemarket website) did come back as an SVX model. Also appreciate what has been said about limited editions needing to be fairly unmodified to merit the uplift in cost, and probably a good early lesson not to try and get to far ahead of myself given current limited knowledge! There is also this online at the moment which perhaps looks a safer bet: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/193430447070 Any thoughts? Thanks everyone, Sam |

To me that looks much more promising, and it hasn't had a large bucket of bad taste poured over it. It looks cherished rather than tarted.
I'm intrigued however by the "factory fitted" cruise control however since I don't think this was ever an option. I suppose that it doesn't say that it was the Landrover factory though.... (I wouldn't let this put you off, it isn't a major point). I know which of the two I would buy! |

Yes, I take it back about it being good looking actually. I think I was head turned by the limited edition marque - having done a fair bit more browsing on what’s available I think I’m much preferring cleaner lines and more traditional defender looks.

Looks nice, for me I specifically didn't want any checker plate or 'drilled panels' to potentially stop any further corrosion issues but easy to their own........

I was interested enough in this 3 or 4 weeks ago to do a HPI check, it was written off back in 2009, the dealer never bothered to mention this to me and when I quizzed him about it he got all ar$ey with me so I walked away, and thankfully found another one privately which I am delighted with...
