It's just the perspective in the photo - if you look at the top chassis rail you can only see the top face as the camera is directly above it, then look at the bottom rail & you can see the side of it too, the chain drive is between the two & looks to be offset by about the right proportion to indicate its straight to me 
Wish I'd had something like that when I was a lad - well jell as the yuff might say...
