Yeah, I am aware of what it’s based on. Disco 5 is an immensely capable car, great on road and great off it.

For me it's both mikelike. Price point and ugly.
Even with heavy discounting, it is just too expensive to buy and maintain and the rear end in particular looks terrible.

The whole LR sales and marketing around the "New Discovery"... Sorry Defender all sounds a bit like this too me...

At last a new heritage premium aspirational excellences conceptualisation can be realised. For some time now We have been working in secret on a vision. A vision of lifestyle brand-managed synchronicity premium aspirationalosity

Muto is
1) too expensive
2) too complex for maintenance
3) no outstanding, distinctive outlook
4) eating its own fleet market share
5) competition offers better stuff for same money

This thing is not going to make money and i feel a bit sad as i really do like LR, which my car park shows nicely. Pity LR..

The D5 is a shockingly ugly car from the back i'm glad i don't see it when im driving it. It is a Lot of car though and very capable, I did a lot of soul searching when looking to replace my D4 I tested the G wagon, GLS, x7, XC90 and Q7 all nice cars but not as a good as the D5 for my use cases and all similar price or more for some. I also spoke to twisted and worked out a quote for a 110 but that was hitting £140k and couldn't have fulfilled as my daily Big Cry

The D5 was a Cr@p replacement for the D4 and doomed from the start I am still disappointed with LR over it, the Defender looks like a much better replacement and I think it will do well for many D3/4 owners as a direct replacement. It's available in the right price bracket for the D4 customer market.

Having had a good amount of time poking around my D5 I don't think its overly more complex than a D3/D4, if anything with the DU7 you can service all major components without the body off procedure. I recall when the D3 came out many D2 owners hated it as it would be impossible to maintain and was complex with technology but now i see people not batting an eyelid stripping a D3 down themselves.

I am trying to stay positive for LR in this time, the Defender is make or break for them and must attract a larger market outside the traditional Defender customer base otherwise they will not be around much longer. 110 MY23.5 X Dynamic HSE

My personal view is that when the hideous D5 was introduced LR already knew that the new Defender was the replacement for the D4, and the decision had been taken as part of the brand realignment process to move Discovery into the former Freelander product space.

Regarding your comment about too complex for maintenance - welcome to the 21st century, It is the same for all modern cars not just JLR products. - automatic gear boxes tied to emissions controls linked to electronically controlled engines have to be nowadays - even the cheapest cars now are no longer able to be tinkered with or serviced at home - the only way not to need that sort of complexity is to go totally electric. It is all down to protecting the environment basically, it isn’t because makers want to make their cars simple enough for a guy with a spanner and a screwdriver to fix its because people like you and me send politicians to the UN Environment Conferences by voting them into power.. if JKR had kept the old models in production then nobody would have bought them because taxation on non-compliant cars would become prohibitive, even those kept serviced and efficient. Let’s face it, in 10 years time nobody will want to buy our old tech or modern ICE vehicles because they won’t be worth 1c. From 2015 to 2018 I owned a high tech L494 RRS diesel laden with electronics and complex systems, they never gave a moments trouble BUT when my 1996 Defender TDI 300 was government tested by the same Indy garage that tested my RRS there was a lot of head scratching because my Defender had cleaner emissions than my RRS! - my Defender was originally built with a cat, when the cat failed in the 90 everything was removed from the cat system and the reckoning was the garage that did it set it up in non-cat mode really well! Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come

No doubt some of the product placement work for the Defender was done at the D5 launch it must have as part of the business case process. I remember going to the VIP launch event standing watching MRS RDR slate it in front of all the other customers she was distraught with it and we canceled our pre launch order that night. We said the D5 was basically a Range Rover with a bigger boot they could have got away with calling it the Range Rover XL or something it's almost the same inside. If they had have placed it as a full 7 seat Range Rover it would have sold a lot more units and a higher profit margin as people would have bought it just for the badge.

The DS was definitely planned to replace the Freelander and it made sense to me given he defender was on its way. 110 MY23.5 X Dynamic HSE

Freelander is far superior in every way. The DS is terrible.

The Freelander 2 is probably the best built modern Land Rover IMO.

South Africa 2010 Defender 90 Puma 2.4 SW Alpine White
A kiwi review: https://www.driven.co.nz/reviews/giving-th...n-namibia/

Quote:
Pros
Instant icon: first new Defender in 72 years
Impressive new Terrain Response system
Subtle but clever heritage styling cues

Cons
Premium product so premium prices
High-tech might put old-school 4x4 people off
Still haven't driven this new model on the road ...

... The Defender ate it all up, notwithstanding a few consumables. We got three separate punctures on two different cars for example, but that hardly dented Land Rover’s stock of 120 spares for the event. There are some big rocks out there.

The 18-inch painted-white steel wheels on the expedition D240 models are not only a fashion master-stroke, they’re more practical for off-roading. “I prefer them,” says lead Experience driver David Sneath. “Alloys can break. With these, they bend and you can just tap them back into shape and carry on.”

Genuine problems are few. We get a power steering warning at one stage, possibly due to so much water being forced under the bonnet at high pressure as we rage through riverbeds for hours on end. We also lose a piece of sill trim after being instructed to attack a river crossing with “passion”. Could be considered corporate littering, I suppose. Once these cars get back to the UK, they’ll all be stripped down, inspected, analysed and rebuilt. And no, they won’t be resold; all are destined to work as support vehicles for Land Rover Experience events.

Defender is a fascinating blend of heritage design and the very latest in Land Rover’s off-road technology. Petrol or diesel? I love the earnest clatter of a Defender with a compression-ignition engine, but this is a heavy car at 2.4 tonnes and it’s the grunty six-pot petrol that gives it truly engaging performance, whether you’re creating a rooster tail of sand or not.

This was an exhausting trip, but not an exhaustive test of course. It was a chance for the Defender to establish its credentials in the harsh environment that helped create the legend, before heading out into the wider (urban) world… and a much broader customer base than the previous model could ever hope to attract. Also, a great chance for us to really give it the beans.

Just read in Autocar issue for this week that the Govt has relaxed the lock down rules for car dealerships this week (haven’t seen it anyway RRE else so it could be TrumpNews - I.e. FAKE news!) conditional that social distancing is retained inside the showroom and that all documentation/ paperwork MUST be done electronically. I await my invite for a timed visit to my local LR Dealership to discuss my requirements for a New Defender. Since lockdown it has been possible to order and take delivery of a Tesla at home - the car is delivered to your house while a salesman completes the handover socially distanced and just before he departs your house he and the driver who is taking him back completely disinfect the car in front of you! Hyundai has been doing similar throughout the lockdown too. Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come

I believe Pentland group are resuming some form of business from the 4th May. I’m sure I read it in one of their newsletters.

My spec is pretty much ready to go, the only thing I’m debating is whether to take air suspension or stick with coils?

I’ll be sticking with a base model, back to how I used to order my cars. The Velar I have at the moment has all the toys but I don’t use any of them. It’s not got sim in it at the moment all I use is a Apple CarPlay. I will miss the matrix LED headlights though, they are phenomenal in the dark.
