Given the 255/85/16 is 2 inches bigger in diameter, would having the 255/85/16 spare wheel on the rear door reduce the height a nato pintile hitch could be raised on a Dixon bate 2 pin slider by one inch. .Resulting in a sankey or penman trailer pointing further down towards the towing defender ?
Note:- You can’t get it to the ideal height already with 235/85/16 or 265/75/16 setups Just a thought for those who have or thinking of getting a sankey or penman. A good site to compare tyre sizes https://tiresize.com/comparison/ just put in tyre size of the two you wish to compare and it will give diameter, width, diffence in speed against speedometer etc. |

Same here with a 285 75 tyre and a Britpart wheel carrier, the Nato hitch has to rotate upside down to be able to close the rear door. 2005 Td5 110 Hardtop

Odd as I can put a 33x12.50R15 on the standard wheelcarrier and close the door (just) - no hope of opening the hitch with the door closed and the tyre scuffs on the top of the hitch but the hitch can be upright and it actually supports a bit of the weight of the oversize tyre.... ---

So another option, 285/75/16. But at 11.2 inches wide compared to the 9.3 inches of the standard 235/85 they must rub unless you adjust the stops so much it becomes like trying to turn a supertanker when manoeuvring. On the upside they do fill the wheel arches well , not as large diameter as the 255/85/16’s but not far off. This must have been done to death before on here
![]() Ps. I have 265/75/16’s on factory sawtooth rims shed with Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac tyres. Great tyres and just about to find how high I can get a nato pintile hitch on a 2 pin slider under the spare on the standard rear door carrier. |

How much of a speedo issue does these various larger options cause??

255/85x16 and 285/75x16, which are effectively the same diameter, should make the speedometer spot on for speed, correcting the default built-in over-read.

My partner has 285/75/16 BFG ATR’s with no spaces on her 110 . (Thanks to AJC on here ..! )
She likes the look and the ride is very smooth, with the speedo reading 60 at 60, There is no rubbing under the wheel arches ether. The turning circle is about the same as on my 110 with 235/85/16’s on (with a 110 its a bit like the QE2 v The Queen Mary anyway! ) Poppy - TDCI (Puma) 110XS 2.2 - Camper conversion - see the build here - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic56530.html Elgar -TDCI(Puma) 110XS Dormobile - now sold Devon & Cornwall 4x4 Response - DC126 ![]() |
