They also need to be replaced every 18 months as they rust through

Buy her a pair of these Defender Wives Boots. Better than replacing the side steps every 18 months

I have the same problem with the wife saying it is difficult to get in the Defender. My solution was to buy a fold-up step with a piece of cord attached so once in the vehicle you can just get hold of the cord and lift it in then fold it flat. Works for my wife.

Just put her in the back like every other car
I do find it a bit more awkward getting the carpet roll through the back door than simply dropping it in the boot mind...... |

I'm in the process of prepping some individual steps to replace the standard tube ones as they work much better as steps. Can't give you measurements just yet but I know from experience that they are lower. Darren

My wife is 5'2" and gets in and out of my 110 on the standard side steps (original, and now over six years old, thanks to Bilt Hamber) without issue.
Occasionally, I've even managed to get my mum in and out, and she's 86, nowadays less than 5', and with dodgy knees, so I'm sure they'll do the trick for you. |

Standard steps are fine for short people who otherwise struggle, but suffer badly both from corrosion and off-road damage even when folded up. However the good news is that a quick pressure wash, let it dry, and a blow over with a can of satin black aerosol will solve that for six months, and only takes 10 minutes to do. Liberal application of WD40 from new helps as well but the main problem is stone damage which will chew through whatever paint finish is on there in no time. ---
