Air intake modificaion
I have been reading a few older posts regarding increasing the side of the intake pipe which runs from the air box to the wing. I am keen to do this to mine after reading about some performance increases and efficiency benefits.

Does anyone have any advice/tips? I have spoken to a few people and it seems that it can be done in numerous ways. The size of the pipe can be anything from 75mm to 105mm and then its just down to fitting it onto the airbox/wing. I have seen a decent looking 100mm PVC pipe with or without alu end caps, could be an option.

Let me know if you have any tips! Cheer Greeny. Few pictures of mine currently.

Looks good- Keep looking at doing similar with ours.

Have you had any issues with drawing water into the intake?

Regards

Chris

I used that 3" pipe on my Td5 (although I'm a bit concerned where the jubilee clips tighten up on the ends... looks like it may tear the rubber between the metal coils)

Anyway, with a 3" snorkel now and the impellor fan thing removed from my air box, I can really tell it breathes better.

Not had chance to take it for a good run yet.

Good stuff! Im either thinking about 90mm or 102mm. Does anyone know if 90mm will fit under the steering column?

How much pipe did you need Bankz? Yes I have removed that from the airbox also. Instagram - @Land_Rover_Defender

Big snorkel fitted, never noticed any.

Used roughly 1m biggest you can fit under the steeri column is 3" however it does rub so I ended up making a plastic sheath that cover the intske pipe and prevented wear.

As you can see my larger 102mm intake runs to the wing top now. The pipe work is also siliconed at each end so fully sealed. Instagram @defender_ventures

Been quite a few threads on this recently and im starting to become interested however i dont really want a RAI. I was wondering if itd be ok to have the wintop intake and cut it off just after the 90 degree bend. Im not sure how odd looking that would be.

Been looking at mine again. Just trying to work out where to run the pipework. 102mm cant really go anywhere else other than behind the wing bracket and then over the engine cover. But Bankz I have seen that you managed to squeeze yours down the side next to the brake servo and engine. Instagram - @Land_Rover_Defender

I was thinking how tiny the piping is from my safari snorkel to airbox while taking things apart the other day. Might take it out for a run without any piping on, see how different it is.

Want to do the mod to my 2.2 puma. The above info seems to identify TD5 so is there any info for the puma job thanks. Also is it a 102mm flexi from the wing to filter box?

Cheers

Keith

The arrangement on a Puma is slightly different but there is a kit available from Nugget Stuff. Have a search on that name and it'll find recent threads discussing it.

On a stock Puma in particular, it's a very worthwhile mod as the air intake pipework is particularly restrictive. Darren

Thank a lot. Just sent Pete Bell a message asking if he has a silicone pipe to turbo and if any difference shown. Is it the same internal air box propeller to come out as in previous threads cheers

Just wondering how much difference 102mm would make compared to 76mm for example. If you arent running an upgraded turbo. Instagram - @Land_Rover_Defender
