It was a tiny bit of plastic like the nipple on the plunger but the plunger was free. The new park switch seemed to have no effect but when I detached it from the motor and set the motor away pressing the plunger stopped the motor so it seems to work off the motor.
I suppose the ram on the back of the worm wheel could be worn but all was fine before I stared messing about. new wiper stalk ordered. Jeff Ex 1968 Series 2A Ex 90 TD5 Ex D3 Ex D4 |

latest info: supplier is sending a replacement park switch so await that before I go any further.
I have contacted the supplier about the wheel boxes that I bought which are pre 2001 but asked if I had fitted the post 2002 wheel boxes, as it is possible that post 2002 parts may have been used previously, and they confirmed that the wrong wheel boxes would have the effect of sending the wipers the wrong way! I will see which way spindles are turning when the new park switch is fitted (although Retro said the pre and post wheel boxes would not send the wipers the wrong way but only affect the arc.) Daily briefing _ replacement park switch arrived and fitted and working! Now that I can see where the spindles stop I can see that they are going wrong way when switched on SO moved rack from top to bottom as in post 2002 models (it seems that previous owner had used post 2002 wiper motor and wheel boxes (But I had fitted pre 2001).
All back together and worked fine with no load ie. just spindles, but as soon as I put the blades on the passenger side was making a loud clicking noise, it was slipping the cogs. As Retro had stated the gearing is different so its a mismatch. Looks as if I will have to bight the bullet and now buy a set of post 2002 wheel boxes so anyone want to buy a slightly used set of pre 2001 wheel boxes. Just replaced the wiper motor in my 200tdi after it failed, using an aftermarket replacement for RTC3867 which appears to be correct. All was fine before the motor failed and I haven't touched the wheel boxes, wherever they are are!
AFAIK it was all original. Wiper arms move from the vertical parked position down the windscreen which is clockwise when turned on and is wrong according to Blackwolf, but I haven't touched the wheel boxes just taken the cable out of the old motor and put in the new. Park didn't work so replaced the relay and everything is wonderful except they now park in the vertical position! So, having read this thread carefully again, it seems it could be on of two things: The motor is for 2002> not <2002 - how can I tell the difference? or I need to find the ram described by Retoanaconda to make the motor park in a different position. Does anyone have a pic by any chance? Have I understood that correctly? Rob 1993 200tdi 90 hard-top 1998 300tdi 90 soft-top 2016 2.2 XS 90 hard-top (sold) |

The wipers should be horizontal when parked, not vertical.
I suspect that in the past someone's fitted you wheelboxes upside down. Last edited by blackwolf on 18th Apr 2020 9:07am. Edited 1 time in total |

Yes, thanks, I am aware of that, but if I move them on the splines to horizontal when parked, surely they will just move down onto the bonnet when turned on

Sorry, my edit crossed with your post.
Your wheelboxes are upside down. |

No problem, thanks for the reply. If that is the case why were they OK before? Because they were fitted with a later motor perhaps?

It is possible that the motor is from the wrong period ie. it is pull/push (post 2002) so by turning the wheel boxes 180 degrees that should put it right, I would not mess about with the ramp as this means stripping the motor.
The wheel boxes are under the top dash and it is easy to remove but lots of fiddly little screws (good article in April 2018 issue of LROI that I followed. I had a similar problem to you. My issue still not sorted although wipers are going the right way the passenger side slips cogs as soon as I put the blades on so I am going to swap the new wheel box for an old one and see if that makes a difference. (You would think I was an expert now that I have had the dash on and off 3 times in the last few days and tried the wheel boxes in every position.) It helps if you have 3 very small hands! Couple of decent youtube vids also. Jeff Ex 1968 Series 2A Ex 90 TD5 Ex D3 Ex D4 |

Sorry, I missed the part in your original post where you said it was ok before the motor change. In this case the motor you have fitted is one designd to have the wheelboxes the other way up, so you'll need either to change the motor to the correct one, or flip the wheelboxes. If it isn't the right motor, check the sweep is correct before deciding which coure of action to take. |

Just to conclude my bit of this saga
I have swapped out one of the new wheelboxes (from Bearmach OEM) which was slipping the cogs when wiper blades were on for the older one that I had replaced and all is working fine!!! One of the earlier posts in Search had suggested that Original LR parts were best and not to use aftermarket OEM wheel boxes, how true they were!!!! It will be going back to supplier. Thank you both
Assuming the old and new motors were different types it seems odd that the sweep was fine before and still is, as far as I can tell. I'm assuming there is nothing else I can have stupidly done wrong, so will set about flipping the wheel boxes in due course. Is it worth replacing with new, if I am doing that, or does that add to the job considerably |

Thats what started my woes off, I thought during this quiet time it would be an opportunity to replace the old wheel boxes as the sweep was not great and there was a bit of slack in the system
If you are going to spin the wheel boxes around then you have to take the dash off so whilst in there you could put new ones in as its almost as easy. Also try a second washer nozzle which means moving the central nozzle to the spare holes in the bulkhead and adding some washer tube and a T piece to serve the extra nozzle. The pump can handle both washers. The worst part after getting the top dash off is that you have to remove the drivers air vent which is held on by 2 fiddley little screws so small hand are a blessing. The advice is to buy the best you can afford so LR originals would be best. I did not but bought a kit from trans-global trading off ebay, they provide OEM like Bearmach with free delivery but this turned out to be false economy. Once I had sorted out the orientation of the wheel boxes one of the new wheel boxes was slipping over the cogs no matter what I tried so in the end I replaced it with one of the old wheel boxes. They do a kit which gives you the 2 wheel boxes and the cable but you takes your chance. Jeff Ex 1968 Series 2A Ex 90 TD5 Ex D3 Ex D4 |

Really appreciate the help. Tempted to replace the motor with a later one, which is quicker then wheel box job, but now worried the sweep will be wrong
