United Kingdom 2015 Defender 90 Puma 2.2 HT Aintree Green
Mt82 Oil sensitivity
Just a quick one... after putting the 90 in for a major service last month I noticed the cold shift was terrible. It was the day before lockdown so its not really had much use... but I've driven it a few times and on cold mornings (around 0deg) the shift from 1st to 2nd was so bad that it was actually impossible to get into 2nd gear. you had to double clutch and rev match, and even then it was terrible. Once warm it drove fine.

I queried the garage (different one to the last that over filled the box...) to get the answer they used a GL4 75w oil and filled it to the level plug. Oh great, that is 2 out of 2 indy's up here that think there is a level plug for the MT82!

Could not be arsed to argue any more so I bought another 2 bottles (had some left over from last change) of Castrol Syntrans https://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-739-castrol-s...v4QAvD_BwE and did an oil change.

Took 2.9ltrs out.... put the required 2.2lts back in and its like you have swapped the gearbox for a new one.

All this talk of poor shift quality in the pumas makes me think it might be down to wrong oil selection. seems very fussy!

Germany 2011 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 SW Baltic Blue
You're spot on! I had the same experience years ago. Foolishly I also tried an additive and had to flush it out Embarassed
When I first got the 110 I was really worried about the build quality as getting into 3rd was tough and the Mustang MT82s made about the same time were made in China out of cheese.
However, I finally found out the Defender boxes were made in Germany (Getrag). With good oil and gentle wearing in, my gearbox has been perfect for 8 years Thumbs Up Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing...

United Kingdom
wrong oil
old oil
too much oil

all seems to affect this gearbox.

overfull is the most common and my 2013 lr was over full from lr after a gearbox swap (in warranty)

they refused to look at it as they said it was right to fill to the level plug.......

main dealers need we say more
