Car Key by Apple
If you hate Apple and all it makes don’t read any further............

Apple has launched some new car security software that utilises both Keyless entry AND their phones’ camera through FaceTime to unlock your car - basically facial recognition is the key to the car.

It would be a huge feather in LR’s supposedly superior car security system if the New Defender came with this software already installed from 1st car deliveries starting as soon as the lock down is relaxed. Tesla is already integrating it into the anti-theft systems of their latest models............ JLR don’t exactly have a great reputation with regards to making their cars less likely to be stolen as even the latest version of InControl Secure has been found to be too easily cloned by thieves. Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come
2020 D240 1st Edition in Pangea Green with Acorn interior. Now gone - old faithful, no mechanical issues whatsoever ever but the leaks and rattles all over the place won’t be missed!

I would have though that if the facial recognition works as well in the car as it does on the phone, that would be a great way to cut down on traffic and improve air quality! Rolling with laughter

I often wondered, what happens if your phone battery goes flat? (or in the case of facial rec, lend you car to someone else? or a mechanic at the garage)

More tech to go wrong I think....

it would be good if they do it, you can lock and unlock your car from the landrover app anyway so technically they just need to open up their API to apple. Ive used the app a few times to get in the car when haven't got the keys its handy and i would love to be able to drive without keys too. 110 MY23.5 X Dynamic HSE

So would most of the criminals I'd imagine....

As a good friend of mine quitely says.. "there is no thing as digital security".... And he should know... He advises the Gov on such things...

So, I expect... It won't be long before they will be disappearing from a driveway near you......

..so, someone would require to obtain nice, clean photo of person (thanks to FB crap and similar), then do some thermal rubber print, stick it on to face and unlock your car...happened here in some housing areas..

Just back from a blast on my mtb (hours exercise, no pub involved) I remembered having an almighty off at Swindley Forest.

Apart from a fooked shoulder and other minor injuries I also smashed the screen on my phone.

The biggest pain was not having my music or using Memory Map to get back to the car but can you imagine breaking the phone then not being able to dive home,,,,, Shocked

Another thing when in a previous job product testing alarm systems, when Apple did a system update it could take days for the alarm companies to update the App to work.

Can you imagine updating your phone over night, then not being able to get into youe car the next day.

I think I will leave that technology for those that get excited by such things....

Ecco not sure I follow are you talking about circumnavigating Face ID? Then yes they would need to trick it and also steel the corresponding iphone. A bit more convoluted than stealing keys but technically possible. Same for Touch ID if they could steal your phone and some how replay your finger print on it. Using the app uses the cloud to connect to the car not the radio waves the fob uses. Fraudsters need to hack into the cloud to unlock your car not record the fobs signals like they have in the past. It’s a different attack vector but still a target and opportunity if security isn’t good.

Tesla (I think) use Bluetooth or nfc rather than cloud but landrover it goes upto the cloud and then back down to your car. I can unlock it from anywhere in the world.

Side note, passwords trump biometrics on phones biometrics are simply a proxy to make it quicker for the end user to get in. To add biometrics or amend them you use the password. It all comes down to a password and in some cases two factor authentication. 110 MY23.5 X Dynamic HSE

I still ask myself.... WTF is wrong with a key... It's amazing we managed for nearly 100 years using such outdated technology....

All this cloud crap... wifi etc... gimmicks for the marketing men... ASK FCA in the USA when some hackers added porn to the Freemonts display... Oh the joys... they only did it to point out that the Brake by wire (another stupid idea) had software flaws....

Oh the joys

Laughing I’m a total idiot of a geek so my answer will only wind you up.

I hate physical keys, every car I bought for probably the last ten years I have ticked keyless entry where possible. And it’s then still wound me up having to carry a fob when I have my phone ! And having 2 or 3 cars all with fobs on my key ring is a big first world problem for me. One phone (or watch) for all my cars - it’s the future Laughing 110 MY23.5 X Dynamic HSE

Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

Yeah, That would just annoy me... Worrying about flat batteries and getting my phone broken, wet..... But I suppose change for changes sake is progress of a sort...
Don't get me wrong... Simple well thought out electronics aren't a bad thing... It's my job of a fashion... Application engineer at WSBK/BSB level.... But when you see this TAT added on for no real gain, Well apart from giving the PR guys something to sing about... Yet another warmed over same, same platform with nothing new (apart from the plastics added on)... Then I suppose you've got to come up with something cheap to bang on... Beats real technical development pound for pound...I suppose...

I’m looking forward to getting a key, because it will be the new style rather than the pebble that’s been around for years.

It’s the simple things Laughing
