Probably engine oil and creosote. FiL used this on his gates/fence and is many years old. 1999 Defender TD5 110

Been a while since I built a shed, and then I probably over engineered it massively. But thinking of doing a project for a niece. She wants a 12' X 10' shed/summer house.
When I built mine years ago I built the frame from 2' X 2' and 400 centres. I think I had the right size timber but a bit to close on the centres. Trying to look at online pics and it's hard to see what they do. But I reckon they're about 600mm centres. The shed I bought a couple of years ago (cant recall where from though) is in 1m panels, and all interchangable so you could configure it any way round you wanted it.
Uprights are 25x25mm and 50x50mm for the roof trusses. Its withstood the recent bad weather without issue. Assembled myself with the assistance of a friend over the course of a couple of evenings. Walfy ,What will you clad the shed with ? Decent thickness featheredge from timber merchants 600 centres will be fine . Very thin featheredge from some of the diy places 400 centres is likely not to be close enough to make a lasting job .

I need to price up the various options for cladding. A lot will depend on her budget. So it looks like stronger frame for thinner/cheaper cladding or smaller size for frame and stronger cladding.
Now my thought process would be stronger frame and then you have the option of cheaper cladding if it needs repair. But will speak to her and see what she wants. Would then need to draw up plans and a cutting list. If you do build yourself, as you are in the NW, these guys are great (and cheap!) for pressure treated timber (this is where I bought the materials for mine):
https://www.mdhanafin.co.uk/product-category/timber/ If you go to them with a decent bill-of-materials they will do you a good price. I planned mine well, and had just one plank left over at the end of the build 
I built mine line an internal stud wall (i.e. frame), then clad on the outside with 18mm x 150mm lengths. Rock solid...can walk about on the roof and it never moves at all. Also I had 2nd hand french windows as the doors. In needed a concrete floor as I may put a heavy motorbike in there... Definitely worth building your own as you can control the cost-cutting measures that go into most examples, but there are good suppliers around for pre-made small to medium sheds. I would expect minimum of 75x45 for the wall framing and 19mm cladding (actual finished thickness not nominal). And proper roofing like Onduline - not horrible old felt - plus perhaps most importantly.... gutters!

I like over engineering but it's not my budget or garden it's going in. So I will be constrained by her budget. But will advise to go big

Yep 25x25mm. Agree it looks a little small but as the panel sizes arent massive at 1m wide and 1.7m tall, plus they screw into the adjoining panel, it makes it pretty sturdy. Thanks, My initial thought process was 50x50 for outer edges and either 50x25 or 25x25 for studs. But that sounds to complicated for my tiny brain.
