Tdi /tdci ignition barrel
Hello all,

I have a small dilemma. In the picture attached, the ignition on the left cane from a Puma defender and the one on the right from my 300tdi whic would have originally been a NA 1985 car.

Now I have fitted a Puma bulkhead to my 90 and I have a key for this. My original key for the old barrel has since gone walkies as it’s been off the road since 2017 etc etc.

Now the pins on the original ignition are good for a 300 but the ones on the left not as I’m let to believe. Can I get the switch for a 300tdi that will fit the left hand barrel? Or can I swap barrels over?? Any advice will be welcome. Thanks
Dave

Hi Dave, I've added the photo for you Smile

I think you've got them mixed up, the one of the left of the photo (black plastic base) is the original 1985 diesel switch. The right hand one is the type fitted to petrols and all diesel from 200 Tdi onwards.

The early diesel switch is physically bigger as it handles the full current of the glow plugs in the first sprung loaded position before start.

As you have the key(s) for the Puma barrel and you have a 300 Tdi engine, use the Puma barrel and switch (white base).

You will need to change the main incoming power feed (brown/white) from a 9.5mm wide female spade to a 6.3mm wide female spade to fit the later switch.

Connect according to the diagram below - upside down from the switch in the right of your photo.
