What is the puma era alternator/starter motor cable size?
Seems like a stupid question - just go measure it right?

What I need is the copper inside the cable - cross sectional area/diameter, so i can get the right cable size matched in the other side of a mega fuse i'm installing to replace the awful one that's fitted to the battery terminal as standard. Going in as part of a dual battery install.

Does anyone have access to a wiring diagram that lists cable sizes, a starter motor pulls 1000a at cranking short term, but the cable isn't sized according to that current rating or it would be in excess of 70mm2 cable. It's not. It's closer to 35mm2.

I don't want to cut the cable and reterminate whats already a good termination done by the wiring supplier of JLR at build. And that's the only way to tell on the vehicle without baring out the copper and stripping the insulation - which isn't really desirable either Neutral Neutral

35mm2 will do the job. Not sure what std lr is, I would guess at 35. It's not 70mm2. We run 70 and 90mm2 for heavy winch current applications. Cheers

Thanks, would certainly be good if it was 35mm2 as that's what i've got in the shed and i'd rather not buy another reel. Not cheap stuff!! The overall diameter looks about 35 ish.

Trouble is you can't just go " well what carries 1000a then as that's peak current " as it's not sized based on continuous load.

My 8274 is on 35mm cable too incidentally. Have you ever had issues with running 35 or just went for 70/90 out of speccing for continuous load? 35's all i had at the time again - could switch it over just wondering if you'd ever run it and seen an issue. It's only got a standard motor on it.

Interesting, great info! I was planning to mount a battery cut off switch soon and bought 35mm2 cable for the job...now I will have to reconsider my cable choice. Defender 110 SW MY2011 2.4tdci decat, no EGR

Hi Martin,
that's interesting. In the 2012 and 2015 wiring diagrams I have, it's 50mm^2.

35mm2 will work no problem. I have 4 pumas wired with it.

Ref the 70/90mm2 we used to run competition vehicles. With a std motor bow1 size, 35mm will cope. When we moved to bow 2, then bow3s, then twin motor bow3s the current draw was huge hence bigger cable. Twin bow3s (9hp each) was originally 4 x 1000cca, 110ah batts to cope with demand, that's with two alternates . In end went 24v through 12v so current was reduced, line speed increased and motors saw a good 18 to 22v under load, which is far healthier for them than 9v!

Edited to add we were prototyping for goodwinch for 12 years or so. Cheers
