Hey everyone, I'm think of getting y61 axles under my 110 td5, has any one done this or do you know any good write ups?
Plus side and the reason of think about this: -it seems these are the strongest in stock and cheaper alternative to upgrading the internals on the original defender axles. -rear locker in stock. negative side: -rear axle has center diff which will might cause vibrations from the prop. |

They great and quite a few people I know run them on off road competition trucks.
You'd normally use the steering arms and modify chassis to suit with drop boxes. You'll also need some custom props making which might be expensive. Speak to Gwyn Lewis |

Thank's for the advice, I will try getting in touch with Gwin Lewis as I am already using his wide angle props. Also tomorrow i will try calling scrap yards around me and figure out what would be the prices for two axles with as much as possible around them

Not me, but friend of mine has it on his toy car. And he has already broken on axle case, and several times the internals. With the range of problems to solve, next car has Rover axles with heavy duty internals. It is cheaper, and works similar. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "BlufĂnek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo

Nissan front axle has 1.26" axle shafts compared to the Rover 1.24". So you will have to upgrade in both cases if you want to run hard more than 33" tire.
In the rear Nissans have 1.31" axle shafts, similar in strength to Ford 8.8 and Dana44. This may be OK for 35s. The Nissan differential is strong (9" ring gear). Defender 110 SW MY2011 2.4tdci decat, no EGR Jeep Wrangler YJ 1990 4.0. Front 78' Dana 60, Rear CUCV 14 bolt |

I did this on my old Discovery challenge truck, though using Y60 axles not Y61 . I did a write up here that you may find helpful

The Nissan diff housings are big. If you use 35"tyres on LR axles you have about the same clearence (only a little less) then with 37" on Nissan axles. Roel

I heard about Nissan axles being bigger then rover ones, but to be fair I think this only applies to the front axle in my 110, while Salisbury in the back is probably around the same size if not bigger.
Well I guess it depends on how you wheel your car.
I have to say I already read your write up, was very useful to get the idea what I am about to face I did a few calls and found both axles from 2.8 Y61 patrol which if I'm correct will also come with 4.625:1 ratios and this is also a gain for me as I'm planing 37 inch tires. I'm ready to pick them up as soon as we're free from this COVID-19 lock down. I also contacted Gwyn Lewis and found out that he can make custom props which will fit lt230 tbox and h233 axles. Another question i will be facing is whether i will be able to sell of my current axles and props as there are not too many defenders in Lithuania |
