I’ve spray painted a few cars...
It’s always easier to spray a vertical panel than a horizontal one... get it vertical if you can. Maybe hang from something? Dust is always a major problem so invest in a few “tac rags’ as a final wipe over before paint. Also water the floor where you are working...it’s amazing how much dust you kick up. Only paint when it’s dry and not humid otherwise you will get a bloom effect and possible micro blistering later Clemmo Make today a little better than yesterday but not so good as tomorrow.... Thanks Grafty, I guess I can make a block out of a length of wood and then attach the abrasive with double sided tape? 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS |

Slightly ahead of you, I did have a problem with dust when I sprayed it flat last time, so I;ve rigged a way to gang it from the ceiling for future painting. I've got no tac rag, but I do have a ton of panel wipe and some lint free cloths. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS |

Yeah that'll do it, just make sure it's smooth. Any lumps will transfer into the filler 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon 1990 Vogue SE Triumph Tiger Explorer 1200 Td5 90 Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic50767.html Tdi 110 Thread https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic69562.html RRC Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic54492.html Instagram http://www.instagram.com/george_grafton |

Quick question to all the knowledgable types. As mentioned already, I'm thinking of doing this this summer. The whole DC exterior. I'm happy to take my time, panel by panel, door by door. I'm doing it because my paint looks dull, and in parts is peeling/bubbling. I am not doing it to also affect an repairs on dents. With this in mind, and baring in mind that I don't have any large or noticeable dents, do I need to fill them anyway? Will simply painting the areas create a weak spot in the paint because of the dent? Note that I fully intend to do the full layers, primer, coats, etc, just wondering if I need to add the extra labour for what are a very few small dents? Monsieur Le Grenadier

Preparation is key - pun intended
As long as the paint is properly keyed, all the way into the dent then it will have no effect on the paint. Although if you're going to paint the defender then it's the perfect time to sort the dents 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon 1990 Vogue SE Triumph Tiger Explorer 1200 Td5 90 Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic50767.html Tdi 110 Thread https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic69562.html RRC Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic54492.html Instagram http://www.instagram.com/george_grafton |

I’ve gone again with the etch primer and much happier this time. The finish is very slightly orange peel which might come out with some 1200 wet and dry. I think that happened because I had too small a nozzle on the gun (1.4) and not enough volume of paint getting through.

I’m in enforced quarantine. Loooooads of time on my hands (I left work as I’m about to PM the renovation of my farmhouse....great timing ) and I can’t get the parts I need to do any work on the Def. Would have been a perfect time to start stripping the panels. Ho hum. Only another ten days to go. Monsieur Le Grenadier

Looking good
I'm hoping we don't have to close our 'site. Luckily I've been planning for lock down and got some parts in stock, just in case 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon 1990 Vogue SE Triumph Tiger Explorer 1200 Td5 90 Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic50767.html Tdi 110 Thread https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic69562.html RRC Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic54492.html Instagram http://www.instagram.com/george_grafton |

Well, the jobs stopped indefinitely by Corvid 19. I can't get replacement filters for my respirator, everywhere is either out of stock or only supplying health care. I'll need to find something else to do to pass the time 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS
