HELP! Shut off noise
I'm struggling with my defender puma 2.4 2007.

What is the sound after I stop the engine on the video?
It's been there since I bought the car quite recently, but so far only when I stop the car.
Now I can sometimes hear it while driving too.
Normal or fu ... ked?!

It does not sound good ..

As above EGR value or exhaust Gas re circulation valve

They clatter clatter clatter when you tun off like a self cleaning thing...

Mine got louder and louder even after cleaning.

Solution - Remapped, Blank it off and code the remap that it isn't their....

Now it make NO noise and the car runs better.

Thumbs Up

Aaah .. Just what I wanted to hear ! 🙏😊

I've remapped the ecu and was told the EGR was blanked at the same time (software blanked?)
Do I need to blank the egr mechanically too?

Hello

The garage that did my remap, coded it out of the ECU and also put a physical blank over it (like a small metal plate)

Sounds like your ECU still thinks it's their otherwise it would not clatter...

Mine was getting very noisy like embarrassing when I turned the car off...

My ECU sometimes makes the noise when I change gear at low speed. Can I ignore this, or will it get progressively worse until the vehicle stops running or goes into limp mode?

I’ve looked an YouTube videos and it’s clearly a pig to replace/clean.

Probably EGR remapped out and blanked, but cleaning cycle has been left on to keep the mechanism working?

As stated above it’s the EGR going through a cycle to ensure the open and closing mechanism is cleared of fresh carbon. It does not do it every time you stop the engine, but should do it most of the time. So hearing it is a positive sound I listen for. Not hearing most times you switch the engine off likely means you have a malfunctioning EGR, which will likely mean Diagnostic Trouble Codes will follow (P0401) , then the Malfunction indication Lamp (MIL - yellow engine symbol) illuminating and engine going into limp mode. Changing the EGR On a 2.4 is not technically difficult, just real fiddly as it’s difficult to get to all the fittings. On the 2.2 it’s even more fiddly to get to the two bolts, two nuts & studs and two coolant pipe clips. I replaced the EGR on my 2.2 as had the above symptoms. On the 2.2 the OEM part used by LR, stamped FOMOCO as it’s a ford part is actually made by pierburg (has their part number on it as well). So sourcing a pierburg valve directly meant it cost £100 inc delivery. Lots cheaper than from landrover and it’s exactly the same part. I had to replace mine at 51k miles, some last longer, some less. It all depends on your normal driving conditions.
