If they have changed the starter try the Earth or Negative cable from the battery to the chassis. Or it could be a damaged starter ring gear on the fly wheel. If the dealer ain't fixed it give it back to them. Get a replacement like for like vehicle until its fixed

well it back there now and im in a 59 3.0l v6 rr sport so all is good |

Did you get to the bottom of this in the end?
Mine '07 Puma has what sounds like a similar problem, which started as a very infrequent intermittent fault but is getting more frequent (now happens about 3 times a week). When cranking the engine to start it sounds as if the starter is jumping in an out of mesh - horrible destructive noise. Sometimes turning the key back to the fully off position and then retrying is OK, sometimes it will do it two or three times in quick succession. I haven't noticed any indication from the dash lights, they seem normal. I am thinking perhaps ignition switch, battery, starter motor, starter solenoid or possibly immobiliser? Are there any other relays involved in the circuit? Any suggestions, or suggestions for troubleshooting? It is out of warranty hence I really need to sort this myself. Thanks! |

Hi
There was a fault with some of the early ignition switches that lead to multiple starter motor failure. I wonder if your problem is a version of this fault. The revised ignition switches have a key with a much bigger black plastic bit where your fingers grip. Your problem does sound like a loose positive to the starter or a loose earth to the battery/gearbox. I have had my negative battery terminal work loose and fall off leading to a non start. Mine had it. Fixed witha good earth point and F tight baterry terminal 8you can put a bit if copper wire between the battery terminal and the Negative bracket Puma 110" SW

I did wonder about the switch, and it should be one of the cheaper things to swap out (apart from the hassle of getting the old one off). It is unlikely to be a loose earth connection, since I ran an extra (rather massive) earth cable from the battery to the winch mount. Positive is a possibility, or the energising feed to the solenoid. The fact that the 'ignition' switch is a Lucas item desighned in the early 1970's makes it a prime suspect! |

As MK said above. I had alot of starting and imobiliser trouble and found out that with was due to one of the battery terminals being loose. Slight tightening and light tap of a hammer on the battery post / termainl and all was well

Hi all,
Mine has this exact problem, although it seems to get worse when its cold and it starts absolutely fine after 2-3 cycles of turning key and trying to crank, getting awful noise and turning key back to pos 1. Can this indicate that new glowplugs needs fitting? 130k -07 110SW |

Mine recenty had a no power situation from the battery at all. Initially thought it was from the battery terminals but apperently it was from one of the loosen wires to the relay box under the driver's seat! Then tightned with a srew driver and job done!

Battery terminal loose appear to be a common problem .
