That looks like a Series III parts book diagram.
Reality is it doesn't really matter. I've always put the slip joint at the transfer box end but it makes no difference. |

Surely as the axles are lower than the T box then the joint should face towards the axle.
Then any water and debris will tend to head downwards and away from the joint. This is one of the reasons why the rearmost UJ often fails, which is something you can’t do anything about as being low. At the rear and the lowest point it attracts the most water ingress etc and is the most common to fail. The front axle UJ avoids it much more because spray and water is often kicked up more to the rear. So in effect, the Sean’s IIRC should face each axle away from the T box. Sliding joint to the transfer box front and rear is what I've always done. I do it that way round on the front to prevent crap being forced into the sliding joint as it's not particularly well sealed.

Popped into Land Ranger services today and he confirmed that it does not really matter, phew scrapped my knuckles sticking it on last night👍 1990 200tdi conversion 90
