Only noticed a regeneration the first time it happened from new, when I got a strong smell of hot metal.
It might be worth checking if any oil has spilled/leaked onto the DPF. This would account for smoke and fumes. |

A DPF regen will increase the visible exhaust emissions but certainly not to the extent you describe, and not enough to notice while driving. Puma Defenders are quite obvious when they do regen, the engine note will vary and become a lot harsher and if they're in the post injecting phase you'll hear a sound I liken to "twanging" a ruler over the edge of a desk. This is the noise the injectors make when they inject in to ambient air pressure (to dump fuel down the exhaust for the regen).
When you do a "static" regen which is initiated by a diagnostics tool and there's no speed to blow the fumes away you'll see white/yellow tinged smoke out of the exhaust but nothing extreme. Does sound like something touching the exhaust, or a failed exhaust gasket. I'd have a good check over it to make sure the exhaust isn't blowing at all. The smell in the cab will have been made 100 times worse as TDCI heater boxes don't seal against their intake pipework so they pull in a lot of air from next to the engine. You don't want to be breathing in exhaust fumes if the exhaust is leaking! |

No, everything normal before and after the fume and smell sequence. I did the entire trip from the Alps to the South of France, the car ran as smoothly as ever. I'll bring it up with my friendly stealer.
