I had no idea there is a PAS res filter in the original plastic tank.

In the original metal ps reservoir there is a paper element filter which can be changed but the price of a new filter is eye wateringly expensive.
The plastic reservoirs have a gauze mesh fitted underneath the white disc, not sure if that is available as a replacement part but it is possible to remove it for cleaning. Black particles suggest seal/seals breaking down somewhere in the system. The ps on mine occasionally feels a bit limp twisted but usually this is only at engine speeds below idling revs It is not a Defender, it is a One_Ten |

its not filtering the oil as an engine or fuel system filter would more to try and stop any foreign particles or devris making their way through the pump and in general they last the life of the car
as above more likely you have a pump / rack issue causing your problems |

That is another possibility. If you have a branch of Pirtek near you it might be worth your while to pop in and have a chat with them. They have everything needed to replace the rubber elements of the pipes for a fraction of the cost of renewing the entire pipe. It is not a Defender, it is a One_Ten
