And I suppose there should be something for the 2/3 row? @williamthedog Point being: “better safe than sorry” instead of “better dead than worry” 
And maybe laughing at it would have been my comment some years ago, before a relatively “mild” experience into “dying like a man”. Didn’t like it at all... So I welcome everything that will make Defender NCAP 5* worthy. |

I hit a deer doing 80kph at night, skidded on its carcass as it wrapped itself around my front wheel, then I came off the road hit, knocked down and drove over a tree. I must at hit the tree doing at a least 50 kph. The Defender was a complete write off. There wasn't a straight panel on it. I walked away from that a bit shaken, a bit humbled but fine.

The price they are charging for the new Defender, I would be expecting a private ambulance and healthcare thrown in.
Or maybe that will be the “Medical Pack” which will be an extra? |

More like safety-jokes lobotomy. Seriously, I would have loved if they didn’t change anything except make it more safe (and posssibly a tad bit more comfortable). Some airbags, stronger body, maybe a couple of cm more room inside... they could have done it tor 3k more. Maybe 5k tops. But they decided to change the concept completely, and who am I to complain. I can either like it and go to purchase or don’t like it and pass. And it happens that for me, safety issues are an important part of the overall “liking”. @CharlieDonuts Quite a story. But not a proof of anything generally. You could have just as easily hit your head at a certain point and end up dead. People fall from 7th floor and get away with it - does that make jumping from tall buildings okay? If I drove Def off the road at 50-80 kph and hit a tree on purpose - will I be surely able to avoid injury, just like you did? Safety features mean that somebody thought about bad things that can happen and then created a solution to reduce the risk. This doesn’t mean that you cannot “survive” the car crash without those safety stuff, but... If I took 20 people to perform the similar “stunt” like you did - 10 in “old” Defender, 10 in “new” Defender - which group would you bet on to have less injuries? I would on “new” Defender - and I’m pretty sure that would be win by a large margin. |

There's very rarely a week goes by without an air bag recall. Just this week:
Brand: VW Name: Crafter Production dates: The affected vehicles were manufactured between 27 December 2005 and 30 September 2016 Risk type: Injuries The propellant used in the airbag inflator may experience a material alteration over time due to degradation occurring after prolonged exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures and high-temperature cycling. In the event of an airbag being deployed, the excessive internal pressure may cause the inflator body to rupture and metal fragments may pass through the cushion material causing injury to the occupants. Brand: VW Name: UP Production dates: The affected vehicles were manufactured between 1 August 2011 and 7 June 2012. Risk type: Injuries The propellant used in the airbag inflator may experience a material alteration over time due to degradation occurring after prolonged exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures and high-temperature cycling. It seems nobody is willing to consider that they may need to be "lifed" and changed out at periodic intervals. At what cost? Will it mean older vehicles are scrapped just for this? |

I'm 110% sure that if I was to be involved in a nasty accident I would rather be in the new Defender than the old one.
But sadly for me, it's probably the only thing in favour of buying one. |
