Good evening,
I have a standard genuine battery in my Puma, a new one since two or three years ago if I remember well. In the beginning if I occasionally connected my MXS5.0 charger to it, it would fully charge the battery in about 1 hour or so. These days, leaving the truck rarely used in the winter it is quite different. The charger will fully charge the battery, which then will show about 12.5 V when checking a day later. In about a week at rest the voltage will have dropped to 12.3V which guess is not too bad. But what I can’t understand is that the MXS5.0 will now need about 6 to 8 hours charging time before showing that battery is full. Sounds long to me, don’t really understand. Truck is electrically very standard, no electric guzzling gimmicks added. If I decide to use it before recharging after a week of inactivity, no sign of a weak battery at all. Any explanation why I have these long charging times in the normal car charging mode on the MXS5.0? Eric You never actually own a Defender. Spec for my battery is a Varta 90Ah. The same as the factory installed one. The charger is the Ctek MXS5.0, so should charge at upto 5Ah. I just don’t understand why charging from 12.3V back up to 12.5/12.6V now takes 6 to 8 hours. I know the Ctek won’t charge continuously at 5Ah during that period, but still it seems long to me.

I regularly charge up the 110amp batteries for the caravan, I noticed when I switched from a "normal charger" to a Ctek that it took longer to reach fully charged. The explanation I have been given is that the Ctek senses that the battery is almost fully charged and backs off so not to boil the battery. Don't make old people mad.
We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to us off. Richard |

I think this is normal behaviour for the CTEK. I have the same charger as you and also noticed that it takes longer to charge from 75% full than from 50% full. I haven't taken voltage readings though, just going from my guesstimate of battery charge.
I also leave the charger connected for long periods and the charger goes into "maintain charge" mode with the final green light coming on. Don't think you have a problem if the battery seems ok when starting. Stephen |
