The national limit needs abolishing imo on country roads, all cars these days are pretty quick and it's far too easy to drive too fast for conditions. It was introduced when the average car could barely get to 60mph let alone in 8 seconds which is probably now the norm.
Trouble is it wouldn't be enforced, remember speed traps in 30 zones with an actual Police officer? Cant remember the last time I saw one!
Sadly mate, you’re absolutely right.

used to use that roundabout a lot a few years ago heading for Hook from M4 - obviously turning left rather than going straight on - so always had foot on brake quite hard approaching the r/about as its a sharp left turn onto the road that links across to the Hook Road (old A32 once upon a time)Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

I also know this roundabout well, having previously lived in Basingstoke for some time, with friends in Reading and surrounding villages. On numerous occasion had to give up “right of way” to other drivers that have used the outer lane to take the second exit ahead at speed, sometimes with avoiding actions.
Basingstoke is full of roundabouts, more than most towns, and you expect to see all shenanigans at some time, this happens very regularly at one on the opposite side of Basingstoke near J7 of the M3, the roundabout at Hatchwarren where a similar dual carriageway to single carriageway merge happens. Exactly the same situation, now made less dangerous by a couple of sets of traffic lights slowing the speeds down.
