DPF Regen - How Often ?
My dpf does a regen pretty often.

I've been putting it down to frequent short trips, but I've been trying longer drives just to see what it does.

The last regen happened after 135 miles, probably two thirds of which was motorway driving.

I'm wondering what others are seeing with their 2.2 pumas & whether anyone has tried getting their dpf cleaned to remove ash build up?

(I'm using a scanguage to show me the soot level & exhaust temperature.)

Hi .. I use my car daily for work and travel about 30 miles a day. Regen seems to occur about once a week and lasts for about 10 mins. I use the scanguage also to monitor. Thumbs Up 2015 90 XS Santorini Black

I can tell when mine is regening as the engine sound changes - I can only describe it as if it's being amplified by a phaser pedal! Seems to do it every 150 miles or so and my typical daily drive is an 11 mile mixed speed commute in each direction. Darren

I’m normally pretty sensitive to sounds and changes in the performance (I thought) but in 70k miles I’ve never been aware of a regen.. I’ll have to get a scangauge! 2014 Keswick Utility 2.2

When it starts doing it often there is an easy fix.
50mph in third gear for 5 to 10 miles. Then change up to 5th and floor the pedal. The world behind you in your mirrors will disappear in a cloud of black soot and then will clear out. Once it’s cleared you should be good to go. Hold my beer and watch this!

Thanks for the responses, it's really helpful to be able to compare.

I didn't count the 10 miles or so I covered during the regens. Adding that to the 135 would give about 145 miles on average per regen. That seems to match pretty well with the 150 miles or so your both seeing LandRoverAnorak & Vitesse.

So maybe my dpf is ok.

UtilityTruck, I wish my regens were as difficult to spot as yours. Even without the scanguage I pretty much knew when they were happening because of the strong acrid burning smell in the cab. Smile

Mine did it probably once a tank. So one regen in every 370 miles. That’s with a 12 mile commute each way (about 20/25mins drive time)

I don’t hang about though. The harder you drive, the more “passive regenerations” happen (DPF temp above 400C). I've never noticed a DPF regen (110 K km - MY 2012)

The exhaust looks more like a TD5 (= black and not clean at all)

I wonder if the performance of the DPF is that great. But who cares ?

So what is the net effect of each regeneration cycle (apart from oil dilution)? Is the soot that has built up in the DPF since the previous regen cycle suddenly burned off at high temperatures and then blown out of the exhaust in even finer particles which will pollute the air in a short period of time at absolute gigantic quantities? Those burned off soot particles during regen do not just evaporate of course, neither are turned into pure oxygen. Small soot particles are just burned up into even smaller particles, you cannot transform any physical mass into nothing. DPF sounds a bit like a scam to me, on top of which you get the oil dilution problem with more frequent oil changes needed, disposing of this used oil/diesel mix being another environmental benefit of course. At least I believe so may think the greenies who thought out this marvel.

I have noticed the engine note change as described, but this is very infrequent and definitely not between fill ups of diesel.

Never had the regen light on, so either it isn't working, or it is regenerating and I am oblivious to it?

I do quite a few short journeys in my truck, with the odd long trip every couple of weeks or so. It's also not a daily drive.

There isn't a regen light. The only DPF related one is a fault light. Darren
