I have just rewatched Stanley Kubrick's "2001 A Space Odyssey", so could someone explain to me in 4,500 words or less what the last section "Jupiter and beyond" is all about? I have been trying to work it out for the last couple of decades but without success so I feel it is time to ask for help. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

It sometimes gives me nightmares. Some times I wake up in a cold sweat after dreaming that the computer in my series 111 has gone rogue.... 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

one of my favorite films, and one of those films that i wish that the more i watch it the easier the answer would be,
my theory Each time the Monolith appears there is an advancement in mankind Mankind has chosen this advancement to perfect the art of technology for warfare. The bone tool at the start of the film. The bone, thrown into the air becomes the spaceship, born out of World War 2 rocket technology. The satellites shown in space were thought to be holding nuclear weapons though not mentioned outright in the film due to Kulbrick's Dr Strangelove film. On the moon. colonized by man. the other Monolith results in mans mission to go to Jupiter (further colonization opportunities) Here is where HAL goes wonky as it has a secret mission embedded in its programming (regarding the Monolith on the moon communicating with another Monolith on Jupiter) and results in all but one of the crew being killed. HAL is switched off, killed by man. The Monolith takes the final spaceman on a journey which is to show him (mankind) getting older and dying (dying out / extinct). Extinction leads to a rebirth hence to Starchild looking upon the Earth as a place to start again. Except it may not be the Earth but instead it could be the birth of Europa, moon of Jupiter. Now to 2010, the follow up film. The US and Russia are still not the best of friends and sitting on a stockpile of nuclear weapons. The joint US / Russian space mission finds the original Spaceship but also discovers the Monolith multiplying on Jupiter causing it to collapse and become a star. A conflict between the US and Russia has escalated on Earth but the two crews in space have to work together to escape Jupiter turning into a star Life is now starting on Europa and there is a Monolith waiting for intelligent life to begin. In short Extraterrestrials gave mankind a level of intelligence he ultimately used for warfare and the destruction of Earth. They in turn made Europa an Earth 2.0 to start again. If they get it right this time it will stay as a Planet of happy friendly apes who all get along and drive Series Ones forever. Anyway thanks for taking the time to read this, again my thoughts only. No drugs where used in the writing of this only two cups of coffee. Off to listen to the full 17 minute version of In a Gadda Da Vida by Iron Butterfly as that is easier to understand at this time of day |

And in less than 4,500 words (including 2010, The year we make Contact). Impressive. Must get Martin to put this up under a heading of it's own for the use of future generations.

While lots of interpretations of 2001 have been proposed about the final moments of the film defined by the image of the "Star Child," it is generally accepted the Child signifies a great new beginning for mankind.
It may also help explain or give an answer to your question by reading Clarke's sequels to 2001 2010: Odyssey Two (published 1982), 2061: Odyssey Three (published 1987) 3001: The Final Odyssey (published 1997) the only filmed sequel to 2001 is the film 2010: (1984) Odyssey Two the Year We Make Contact, based on a joint U.S.-Soviet expedition sent to Jupiter to learn what happened to the Discovery, and H.A.L. And if all else fails read this book 260 pages:lol:
Scholars have been studying the films of Stanley Kubrick for decades. This book, however, breaks new ground by bringing together recent empirical approaches to Kubrick with earlier, formalist approaches to arrive at a broader understanding Click image to enlarge For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at.. http://www.youtube.com/user/conwy1 |

I went to see this at the pictures year before last for the 50th Anniversary and I'd forgotten just how slooow it is! The last part is hippy psychedelic nonsense but is better explained in the book.
I'm a big sci-fi fan and recently acquired a copy of Moon Zero Two, made in 1969, which I hadn't seen for probably 40 years. It was, on the whole, pretty good and stood the test of time much better than 2001. I like mark's theory.
As a teen I went to the cinema to watch 2001 and I thought it was utter nonsense. Only to find out yeeeaars later that I had been late and that this psychodelic-colour-full-of-stars sequence was NOT at the beginning of the movie. This also explained why the movie had been so short. |
