Here it is, my new 110:
Click image to enlarge What a stunner! I was going to wait and post about this when it had progressed some more but I was doing some planning today and I figured I might as well. I've wanted to do some long term travel for quite a while and I recently had a mid life crisis realisation that I just need to get on and actually make it happen otherwise it never will. With quite a limited budget and a set-off date of Jan 2021 I am quite restricted on what I can afford, so my plan of finding a nice 130 LHD 300Tdi, servicing it, building out the interior and getting on my merry way very quickly fell apart. LHD and 300Tdi are the two things I can't compromise on so I scaled my ambitions back and started looking into whether I could find a 110 in the UK either LHD or with enough left for a conversion. I got in touch with quite a few places but ended up going with Carriages. After telling them my plan, those guys really went out of their way to work with me on what I was trying to achieve. I initially only got in touch for info about whether a LHD conversion was something they'd actually be interested in doing but they already had something in the shop that seemed like a perfect fit. I went up a few days later to see it and we did the deal. The vehicle had been stolen and I think used for a cash machine grab before it was burnt out. I never saw it in this state but got these off their facebook page Click image to enlarge There was a lot of work that had gone on between then and me coming up to see it though. Original chassis repaired and galvanised. Some more progress over the following weeks. If it was an electric vehicle it'd still be smouldering... Since 1973...S1, Air Portable's, Defender's, but only my Wolf TUL HS GS remains

I take it the insurance didn't write this off? I thought any burnt out vehicle was a CAT A or a CAT B at the very least. Fair play on rebuilding this again! It will be a new piece of kit! Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

It has this marker against it: "Category: Category N Insurance Loss. No Structural Damage and Repairable - Insurer Decided Not to Repair." Although the first images look bad, a lot of the body was cut away before the fire. The original chassis has been patched where necessary (only two small areas) and galvanised, axles are original but the engine is a replacement. Obviously the entire body & interior are new but I don't believe these make up anything of the vehicle's identity. Due to the current situation I haven't been able to go and see the progress much but I did get over there toward the end of the build to have a look and make any last changes. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge The inside is sparse: Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge This is how I wanted it though. Just a decent set of seats and everything else empty so I can build the camper side of things whatever way works best for me. My initial plan was to do something similar to this but I'm less sure about it now. The best thing I can think to do is start with a basic fit out and get away for a weekend (restrictions permitting) to see what works, then refine it over time. |
