They are nice. especially the V8 diesel (although apparently that one is very sensitive to poor fuel)
Andrew St Pierra White, AKA 4xOverland on youtube has a lot of videos of these and the conversions he does on them. |

I'm not sure there is a market really. Not one big enough to justify implementing all the adaptations and getting approval for sale in the EU. The 79 is an expensive machine. Yes, there are few people like us and a few businesses for whom it would be the best thing since the Classic Defender died, but are there enough to make business sense? I couldn't afford a new one even if they were available. If there were enough demand Toyota would be selling them here in my opinion.
It was said on the 4xOverland Channel that it's the Australian mining industry that keeps the 70 series viable, without that it would fine the same way as the Defender. The other thing that crossed my mind is weight. The 79 looks like a heavy vehicle and it's likely the payload will not be that great if it is to keep under 3.5t. it may not actually carry any more (maybe less) or tow more than a Hilux under our weight regs. Sadly this is the same issue The Ineos Grenadier is going to have to overcome, and I sincerely hope it can. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS |

Having spent a while living in Africa where they are 10 a penny, I've always wanted one - ideally the V8 diesel in a double cab variant. They are less comfy than a Defender and whilst very tough, they are also stupidly expensive. From memory you can add $15k to a new high spec Hilux doublecab and you are still only getting a poverty spec singlecab 79.
There was a company near Peterborough that were selling new 79s and somehow getting them through UK crash and emissions regs but no idea how they managed it. I was planning to bring one back when repatriating to UK but the cost and bureaucracy to get it road legal simply didn't make it worthwhile so it remains a pipe dream now 2005 Td5 110 Hardtop 1989 300Tdi 90 Soft top 1992 200Tdi 90 Truck cab with Land Cruiser axles |
