Evoke / disco sport engine options
SWMBO is really wanting either an Evoke or Disco Sport, am `I correct in thinking pre 2019 were TDCI 2.2 engines and later than that are the new ingenium? engines?

Also pre 2019 which is the petrol engine 2.0 turbo used - I assume that again later 2019 petrol motors are ingenium?the

I've read about fuel dilution issues on the diesels, any other issues that are noteworthy?

I may get shot for this, but have you thought about a Jag F-Pace?

Just got one for the Fun Prevention Officer and I think it’s head and shoulders better than the Evoque and in a different league (driver-wise) to the Disco Sport...

Umm....

The 'sensible' option for days out with the puppy (now 10 months old and 45kg) plus enthusiast back up and specialist garages would be a VW T6 Californian Beach 150bhp auto - space, high driving position, 7 seats etc.

Other option is the Mecedes V class, not such good enthusiast / specialist back up but a league ahead in terms of comfort and toys, there is also a Vito based camper similar to the California Beach, but harder to get hold of.

Then there is the Evoque - SHMBO has always liked them, likes the LR badge and I would accept the hair dresser sniggers if it were the 240 bhp petrol version.

The choice with £40-£50k and no px is mind blowing so many cars that have been out of our sensible range with kids and mortgages to pay for!

I have been through the LR forums, Discosport seems to be dead and I can't find much on babyRR., having said that also not much about wheels falling off, clutches made of cheese, etc.

Decisions, decisions...

Both Evoque and discoSport Suffer huge issues with oil dilution if they have the Ingenium engine, those with the 2.2 SD4 engine also suffer with DPF issueS and there is currently an ongoing much more dangerous problem in both cars with the bolts holding the steering motor onto the steering rack failing....... that is upwards of £3500 to fix and has been happening to cars over 3 years old and therefore out of warranty. TBH I wouldn’t touch a used Mk1 Evoque or DS these days - JLR are not in the least interested in even investigating the potential fatal steering gear bolts problem. I’ve owned 2 Evoques - a launch day delivery Coupe and a 2014 5 door. The first was faultless in the 3 years I owned it, the second burned out a DPF sensor on average every 3 weeks and I sold it back to JLR after 9 months of frustration and returned to RRS ownership.. the petrol engine used in Evoque from launch to MK2 was the 4 cylinder Ford 2.0ltr turbo Ecotec motor from the sportier Ford Focus models. Now it’s the petrol Ingenium 2.0ltr. There were very few petrol Disco Sports built but there are quite a few petrol Evoques around but they very rarely seem to suffer problems that raise queries on BabyRR where I am the forum moderator - but due to high petrol consumption and that they were auto only in the UK they are less popular, the petrol engine was the only engine available in some overseas markets though. Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come
2020 D240 1st Edition in Pangea Green with Acorn interior. Now gone - old faithful, no mechanical issues whatsoever ever but the leaks and rattles all over the place won’t be missed!

The newer Volvo xc90 has a good sized boot for a pooch that size, plus the comfort of baby rangie, we have a similar predicament with our pooch (60kg) so just gotten a 3 door commercial shogun Jumped ship to reliability - Mitsubishi L200

Thanks that’s useful, and at least I now know LR treat all customers with mutual contempt! Evoque racks falling to pieces, defender axle ends falling off....

Which of the Japanese companies just did a recall because the batteries might go flat and cause a problem?

Wasn't it so much easier, back in the 70's, when cars expired due to the rust moth and the average punter could see the damage and life expectancy of a vehicle before purchasing?
Vehicles are so complicated now, the average Joe, unless they were very well informed, wouldn't have a clue about any of the above problems unless they went looking. JLR aside, they are not unique and a lot of modern vehicles seem to have ongoing issues which may or may not have been recognised by their manufacturer.
My poor old Dad bought a Morris Marina. He knew it was rubbish and it didn't disappoint. The Evoques and Disco Sports are a shed load of money, and a high end marque and the average Joe would assume they were buying a quality product which has been tested and built by a company who was respected for their after sales care? No?
I know Defender ownership clouds most peoples natural naivety to build quality and reliability but I personally know of two people who have had major issues with their Evoques and had to shift them on before they cost a shed load to repair (both gearbox issues).

I had a couple of Disco Sports on loan when mine was being serviced. The first was a Diesel and done what I thought it should do. The next was a petrol and driving steadily, I could see the fuel gauge diminishing at an alarming rate. I quite like the Disco Sport as a vehicle, but with that kind of fuel economy, I would at least expect the engine to make the sound of a V8 to be shovelling petrol in at that rate Rolling with laughter

I think you’re Ute quite correct Rashers, but we bought a new 1.8 petrol FL1 in 2000 and apart from a few squeaks it was relatively faultless, I think I did the head dowels and viscous coupling before they were faults, likewise a 2007 FL2 that was genuinely faultless 1 bulb a set of pads and iirc a set of tyres in 50k - why have LR gone backwards? Just like the car industry of the 70’s - so sad really.

Freelander1 wasn’t exactly the paragon of reliablity when launched - a friend of mine was getting a new set of back tyres fitted by our local dealership Under warranty about every 3000 miles before LR found that they had got something wrong with the rear diff gearing. Then there was the “sealed for life” viscous coupling that seized up after 20000 miles or so use because the fluid in it should have been changed at certain mileages............ I owned an early TD4 automatic with the BMW 2.0 TD motor, it was fantastic - the car was built under BMW’s ownership of LR and difference in quality of build really showed compared to her early build car. Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come
