Ticking noise on light acceleration
I'm trying to track down a noise on my 2005 Defender 90 TD5, wonder if anyone can help? It’s a metallic rattle / ticking that only happens when in gear, the clutch is up and I'm being gentle with the accelerator.

I've uploaded a video of it to youtube - https://youtu.be/RI74kSdiwIU

The engine noise drowns it out at higher speed which is a relief, but is really noticeable between 20-30 mph and i'm cruising. Some days it's a lot louder than others - but can't put my finger on a link to why. Revving the engine out of gear or with the clutch down, just hear the sweet TD5 roar. I'd much rather hear this when driving.

Went in an older TDI recently and it didn't make the rattle, so not sure if its a TD5 thing (haven't been in another one) or something else.

On the video:

4 seconds opening vent while accelerating
6 seconds release accelerator
7 seconds gentle acceleration
10 seconds idle

Also i'll add I don't know a lot about engines, but learning a lot as each thing breaks so if i'm being stupid feel free to let me know.

Thanks!

Being honest, I can’t hear anything that would concern me. But I am only listening on an iPhone

Something to check would be the exhaust manifold. These can warp, stretching or snapping the four end studs (two at each end). Check for soot on the cylinder head.

Also check the exhaust flex section.

Good call with the heat shield. They are always broken or the mounts are.

There is also a little heat shield on the crank sensor that can rattle.

A loose Or blowing injector can make a ticking sound . At least it can on a TDCI and Jeep Grand Cherokee ! https://www.instagram.com/hustynminepark/

Thanks for the replies gents, I've checked the heat shields and seem pretty sturdy. More akin to the engine tap noise but speeds up.

The noise I mean is the fast tapping, the same noise slows down on idle at the end of the video. Maybe it's just normal? It's at 5 and 7 seconds on the vid. Just a little tappy. Could it be what the hydrolic tappets sound like?

I had a previous issue with stalling so the o rings were replaced a couple of months ago and tappets wiped down and adjusted at the same time (sorted it) but tapping noise has happened before and after (and the few years I've had it). I've just started listening to music less in the van and notice it more.

If you had your injectors out at some point then I would definitely just nip the bolts up . They do work lose https://www.instagram.com/hustynminepark/

Solved in case anyone has the same issue and uses search!

The intercooler had sprung a small leak, fitted an uprated allisport this week and my ticking is no more!

Ah well, I was hoping the issue would be something smaller, but maybe that'll help me justify buying a bigger intercooler to my wife. My 2004 TD5 90 makes what I would describe as a rattle, most appreciable in 2 and 3, and less appreciable when under load. Seems to happen between 1300-1800 RPM, a little lower in 2nd and a little higher in 3rd. Don't notice it in 4 or 5. The engines sings at >2000 RPM and ive never had any smoke or overheating so haven't really been concerned, but might go hunting for a leak on the IC. Does that sound similar to how yours worked out ? If anyone has any other suggestions, including "its fine, drive your truck" I would be grateful
