BF Goodrich Mud terrain noise comparison
Dear all,

I am a new member here, and have spent many an hour of late viewing many topics!

I have a 2010 DCPU, and love it. However it is running on BFG mud terrains, and I must admit I find them very noisy.
I am looking to change them for an all terrain tyre, such as continental cross contact atโ€˜s.

My question is, are they likely to be noticeably quieter than the mud terrains? I am not after a silent ride of course, but these do seem to hum considerably!

Any input very much appreciated.

Russell

Yes! Difference between AT and MT is very noticeable. The cross contacts are not the most aggressive AT tyre and as a result are actually very quiet. Youโ€™ll notice a massive difference going between these 2.

What MT generation are we talking KM2 or KM3? Tyre width is also a factor to noise production. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

Thanks for your replies, and your answers confirmed my thoughts.

They are 235/85 16โ€™s, unsure of what generation of MT they are. It says Mud - Terrain T/A if thatโ€™s any use. They have loads of life left in them, are they of use to anyone? They may be available on boost alloys in the near future!

Many thanks indeed.

post up a picture, we will be able to tell the model.

i fitted a set of KM3 to replace 2 last last year and commented on here on noise at the time.

Conti Ats are much quieter than BFG Ats which are quieter than KMs.

Conti Ats are ok as an AT but i find the BFG AT a better tyre for colder conditions and the grassy field scenario over the Conti AT. yes i am running Defenders with both fitted at the moment, and two others with KMs for that comparison too. Cheers

You might be able to get a datasheet for that particular tyre that lists it's dB level. Whilst not a perfect measure you can use it to compare with something you are considering as a quieter replacement.

^^^^ This is true and often includes speed ratings as well.

The only problem is, often some makes or manufacturers draw a blank on such information so makes comparisons very difficult indeed. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

I found my last set of BFG KM2s varied drastically as they wore in terms of noise.

Started fairly quiet- very quiet for an MT, about 10,000 in got quite annoyingly noisy so rotated the position of the tyres and they quietened down again.

Mist be somethig to do with the pattern of wear as well as design.

BFG KMs of any generation used extensively on tarmac will do this, since the tread blocks wear in a wedge shape. I think that most of the noise is cause by the by-now wedge shaped blocks flexing and reshaping as the leave the road surface.

The noise can be reduced and the wear evened up if you regularly swap the wheels around so that the direction of rotation is reversed, which will help keep the blocks flat, improve the mileage you can get out of the tyres, and reduce the noise at higher mileages. It is however a pain to remember to do.

I swear by KO2 all terrains. Supposedly however the KM3 new gen muds are significantly better than the KM2 predecessor on road. North Cumbria Search and Rescue - Team Leader

And no doubt the KM3 probably is even more expensive? $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R
