Front outer wing panel
Evening all,

Has anyone removed just the outer wing panel leaving the rest in situ?
I presume it can be done? Any pointers before I give it a go... special bits of kit?

Cheers

What year is your defender. Which side and is it LHD or RHD?

Hi Nige,

It’s a 2002 TD5 and it’s the N/S (passenger wing)

Hi

Yes I have done it, stuffed my 300 TDI 110 on a lane.

Its a very easy job to do.

Take off the pop rivits that hold the wheel arch on (worth buying spares if you trash any) and disconnect the side repeater.

Take a spanner and start to undo the bolts holding the outer wing on (through the gap created by removing the wheel arch)

One bolt nearest the bulkhead on the top edge was a sod. Once the wing was starting to come apart I used a hacksaw blade to cut it, I never replaced this for the same reason.

Sorry no pictures

Good luck and have fun.

Finally, I had the new panel resprayed in advance of starting the job, so all completed in one day. Next green lane I added the pin stripes to match the rest of the paintwork.. Rolling with laughter

Lucky you.. I have just stripped out the heater and washer bottle in my Puma to get to the bolts along the top inner edge. OMG, what a mess Ford made.. designed for easy assembly on the line but a complete pain to take apart.

I see you have the wheelarch removed, (or ripped off), the first job i would do is go out there first thing and get some penetrating oil sprayed on the (4 or 5) bolts running down the rear edge into the bulkhead. I'm not sure about the washer bottle on a Td5. If it's the same as the Puma bottle you'll have fun getting to the top inner bolts at the front as it's in the way and not easy to get out. You'll have to remove the vertical strap holding the inner wing to the outer, remove the heater intake vent on top of the wing and take out the two screws holding the ducting in. Pull the duct out and youll see/feel a row of bolts along the top edge. Disconnect the wiring and remove the side indicator. There will also be a strap at the bottom running diagonally back from the back lower edge of the wheelarch, again, get some penetrating oil on that and wire brush the threads before removal.

Hope this helps??

Thanks, all great pointers...
Replacement wing is currently at the paint shop so will attempt as soon as it’s back...

Thumbs Up

TIP

Test fit the wing before paint, not all wing metal parts fit out the box
