Given that the some elements of the offroad Information and a few other bits of the Infotainment on a Discovery 5 I drive regularly for work have stopped working since the last update it had.......this prospect does not excite me at all.

Listening to the Radio today, there was an article on a foreign exchange company that had their computer system hacked. It had been hijacked by the crooks, who are demanding a £9,000,000 ransom to unlock it, the crooks stating that they had been in the system for 6 months without being detected. What happens when, and it is when, someone hacks one of the major motor manufacturers computer system and locks it all up or even worse, changes data that stops the vehicles. Anyone with a new vehicle might be ok but anyone with a just out of warranty vehicle will, undoubtedly, be stuffed. Land Rover 1950 series 1

I have been trying to think why any IoT device would need two eSIMs. I can't imagine why a vehicle would need to download an OTA software update whilst it was being used in some other connected manner. I actually think that OTA updates are a terrible idea compared to (say) actually testing software properly in the first place and not having to apply constant fixes or treating customers as beta-testers, but that may be considered non-constructive 🤐
Then it occurred to me that the most common use of dual SIMs is roaming (outside the EU); where the vehicle owner could buy a cheaper data plan when driving through a foreign country. It could also be useful to gain connectivity from two different mobile operators in areas with poor coverage. Putting aside the security concerns, IoT is a good thing. There are all sorts of interesting asset management applications, such as a 'digital twin', where the vital signs of an asset is monitored and failure can be predicted before it happens. Or geofencing to prevent an asset from being stolen. Both quite useful with Defenders, new or old. |
