Have (and have had) various bikes over the years but i am more into 80's larger Jap stuff (currently Katana, GSX1100EFE, etc) but one thing i did have a few years back which is exactly a 2wheel Defender is a BMW R100 GS PD (Paris Dakar)
Bullet proof, low powered in modern terms and very low geared, hence cruising is about 70mph tops (will do nearer 90 flat out) but good fun around the lanes and you sit 20ft in the air......don't have pix to hand but will try and sort Modern wise then the new Nortons are too pricey, unreliable and expensive to sort (perfect Landrover!! ) and your probably better off with a Triumph or if your not too fussed about speed then look for a Kawasaki W650 or so...... |

Have you considered the Triumph Scrambler? British brand albeit probably manufactured overseas. Classic styling, rough and tough go anywhere image.... Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge |

If you are on a budget there is the Royal Enfield Himalayan, if not then the BMW R1250 GS adventure. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

For me a classic Harley with all the options like this one here seems just perfect.
Eric Click image to enlarge You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation. http://youtu.be/yVRlSsJwD0o https://youtu.be/vmPr3oTHndg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GtzTT9Pdl0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABqKPz28e6A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLZ49Jce_n0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvAsz_ilQYU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8tMHiX9lSw https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dxwjPuHIV7I https://vimeo.com/201482507 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSixqL0iyHw |

Or an Enfield Interceptor?
I have 3 bikes. A BMW F700GS is a good start! Ridden the Himalayan, and i find it a bit too slow for modern day traffic, it's wringing it's neck at A-Road speeds...
Gorgeous...was drooling at the NEC bike show recently Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's) Last edited by MartinK on 9th Jan 2020 12:03pm. Edited 1 time in total |

That's lovely, Jerseyman!
This is my old K, owned 21 years from new! On the hairpin at Knockhill circuit: Me and my new GS in Belgium, doing a quick spin round N France, Belgium, Holland (this one's more like a Range Rover with all the toys!: Click image to enlarge And my "Baby GS" for commuting and doddering around (and easy green-laning) Click image to enlarge The Baby GS (800cc) is a perfect intermediate bike, and as per OP suggestion, like a Defender (more like a Freelander probably!)
