M57 would be my choice. All conversion parts readily available and it suits the Defender so well even in standard tune. Tweak it a bit and you can get ridiculous power. WARNING.

If wanting to keep the costs down then how about a TD5? I saw some pictures of one done recently, albeit with no particular report on how it likes the 6 speed box. That isn't an insurmountable problem either, though. Darren

Few companies on instagram showing off their 330d/335d M57 Defenders. It's certainly what I'd go for if my 2.4 gave up the ghost.

Exactly the same. Least problems along the conversion and therefore the fastest way to get going again. Can’t see what’s wrong with the 2.4.

Pretty much the same usage I have with my 110 and i'd have to be strongly persuaded to do anything other than a used replacement of the same type - lots of them available for sub £2K and the job would be done in 2 days.
Not saying the 2.4 is the best engine in the world, but it certainly isn't the worst. Just my $0.02 |

with such low annual mileage what about a 2nd hand ls3 or coyote with appropriate gearbox.
15k might just doing using new(ish) second hand parts? otherwise another tdci 2.4 or 3.2 |

i would go for something easy to work on.
easy to service and get spares petrol powered maybe a ls v8 engine. diesel wise i would merc engines and maybe a bmw cummins is to heavy for me. driven one with the ford 3,2 which was nice but hard on the drive train torque wise wouldn't go back to a td5 from a puma nor a tdi or similar engine . fancy the 6 pot noise and for the miles your going to do an auto is viable as well. |
