Glow Plug timer - deep dive questions
HiForum,

looking for deep dive info on the defender Glow plug timer operation / wiring.

looking to be equipped to test operation with a multimeter - esp around wait to start output.

below is what I have thus far

More along the line of how do I know the wait to start is functioning correctly ( with a multimeter) is it just 12v +?

Presumably you are referring to the TDi glow plug relay?

If so the glow plug warning light is connected to terminal 2 of the relay. However the other side of the warning light is connected to 12V, therefore the Glowplug relay provides the ground connection to illuminate the bulb. The easiest way to test is to connect a bulb between 12v and pin 2 on the relay to test the function.

If you have the rest of the wiring connected to the relay then you can connect a bulb between terminal 2 and terminal 3 which is an ignition feed.

Sorry to hijack your thread but I would also be interested to know what inputs influence glow plug timer on TDCi? As mine heat for maximum duration irrespective of temperature

Tdci is very different as the glow plug strategy is controlled internally in the ECU.

Tdi glow plug "ECU"/timer/unit uses the ignition on trigger, an internal air temperature sensor and a signal from the starter switch (+12V) to determine how long to close the connection between the main power feed in and the glow plug feed out.

Edit to add: the ground path for the glow lamp is not necessarily held on for the same period as the feed to the glow plugs is made. The intention being that the glow plugs remain on for a while after the lamp has gone out.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top
