6 pot front caliper options
For those of you who have upgraded their front brakes to 6 pot calipers and larger discs, either after a larger or more powerful engine upgrade, I would appreciate your comments on your experience.
Firstly, if you have retained the 16" rims, what size discs did you go for ? or if you went for 18" wheels, what discs were you able to fit.
I have searched the forum and found the JE Engineering option that involves AP-callipers and the Hi-Spec 4 pots, but I would love to know of any other manufacturers selling a Defender fitment that you are aware of.

theres a few, alcon / ap racing

bowler do a set 4 pot front big disks,


mine are the ap racing 6 pot front, 4 pot rear some info / pics in mydef thread, used to have a pic of standard disc vs new but maybe lost it when previous site sharing site went down...

Joking aside, it’s not until you see them side by side that you realise just how much bigger upgraded discs are to original. Crikey.

And why do you say to avoid the Tarox option? Monsieur Le Grenadier

Had a friend with them on a b7 rs4, they failed spectacularly.

i think you could use the tarox 6 pots with 16" wheels but i wouldnt put tarox in the same league as alcon / brembo / ap racing...

Interesting. I run a 6 pot Tarox setup on my Escort Cosworth, as this is the only setup that fits under the Cosworth 16" rim. I've never had any issues with them and they perform quite well. The only issue I have is trying to get spare parts for them, as nothing seems to be off the shelf, like AP etc. But saying that, if I moved to a 18" rim I would go AP for ease of spares etc.

Yeah i have a b8 rs4 which i can easily heat up its stock brakes, his is a fairly modified b7 driven hard + tracked and they just wenr't up to task,


tbf i tracked a DBS earlier in the year and after 4 laps had a brake warning light... had to do 2 cool down laps.

Some years ago i ran 2x almost identical cars on the same roads in similar driving styles on the same day........both with fairl new brake kits fitted
1st car had Tarox (10/12 pots??) and 2nd car had AP 6pots both on 330mm discs - whilst the Tarox car stopped it had poor pedal feel and never really inspired any confidence - the AP car just talked to you and asked you to simply choose where you wanted to stop and how quickly

Can't go wrong with APs IMHO. Just depends upon how much you have to spend, and unless you go up in rim size your options will be limited.
As a start, without spending much at all, have you thought of just fitting more suitable pads to your standard calipers?..In some instances, providing your discs are in good shape, you can obtain a good result.

Bowler have a 4 pot, AP 6 pot, and you can now buy the Land Rover Defender grey, which I think are Alcon 4 pots that were on the 70th anniversary V8, although they are £6k Whistle

Not sure you need all that stopping power unless you have a V8, and all of them require 18” wheels

Thank you everyone. I was trying to find a 6 pot kit that would work with the 16inch.
Since posting I have been contacted by a manufacturer offering to see if they can make a set, if I lend them my vehicle, so if that happens in the new year, I will keep you informed. I know it may sound crazy, but I just prefer the 16 inch tyres on the Defender due to the ride comfort ( can't believe I said comfort and Defender in the same sentence)and the rim protection the taller side walls offer.

Just bare in mind that just because a caliper has more pistons it does NOT always equate to more performance - take the Tarox 12pot as a case in point......also in general terms the quality of the components used often has more more effect than size, etc
