Click image to enlarge "Land Rover clearly expects many of its owners to bring their canine companions along for the ride, hence the many dog accessories available for the 2020 Land Rover Defender. With that in mind, the company wanted to see what kind of wear and tear a medium-to-large dog could do to their new SUV. Its solution was to 3D print a dog paw. To make an accurate paw required the assistance of the real thing. The company brought in a Labrador named Yogi from a guide dog center for observation. Land Rover testers set up sensors on a prototype Defender, and measured where Yogi set his paws, and with how much force he landed. Then they modeled an articulated artificial paw based on Yogi's real paws. With the information from Yogi, Land Rover could then create a robot that could carry out tedious, repetitious durability testing on painted Defender parts. The machine would randomly drag the paw on a painted part 10 times, followed by a "linear scratch to one side." This process would then be repeated 5,000 times. Land Rover didn't say exactly what the results were. Presumably, the Defender's paint is pretty tough, though we wouldn't be surprised if you still might see some scuffs and scrapes on the production car with so many scratches to unprotected paint. Of course if you don't want to take the risk, Land Rover has various protective coverings for the rear bumper to keep your pup's paws from marking up your Defender. https://www.autoblog.com/2019/12/14/2020-l...d-printed/ |

I wonder how many bramble and gorse bushes the drive it through to test if they had made the body paint scratch-proof.......there are plenty around the Eastnor Estate Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come
2020 D240 1st Edition in Pangea Green with Acorn interior. Now gone - old faithful, no mechanical issues whatsoever ever but the leaks and rattles all over the place won’t be missed! |

Another utterly pointless gimmick done solely for publicity. I wonder how many painted areas are likely to be regularly scrambled on by a dog anyway. Utter tosh.

They also tested how irate users fill the time waiting for a tow truck because one of the 85 computers build by Fred on a Friday afternoon has itself. The steering wheel can take 1000 thumps, the telephony ignores swear words etc. What a load of BS!

It’s just autoblog making a story out of nothing. If LR wanted publicity from it I’m sure we would’ve heard about it long before now.

Well having viewed the vehicle* in the flesh for the first time today, there were chips in the silver paint of the panel that sits immediately beneath the rear door opening. Due to its curved shape, I would expect any animal jumping in and out to hit this panel with it's paws nearly every time. Overall, it can be viewed as a very nice vehicle. I'd certainly be happy to use it up and down the motorways. It has some nice features. Not sure of the gearstick position, it didn't really fall to hand. The tyre width was huge. The rear door really was very thin in section, not much metal up top, I'd wonder if this would become the modern equivalent to the original Range Rover Upper tailgate in terms of issues. Curved lower edges on the rear door opening looked like they would get hammered moving boxes in and out on a regular basis. The front top edge of the dash was covered in an alcantara like material that really was very nice to the touch. Not sure what it would like after a few muddy hands and a damp cloth. The cavernous space where the gearstick normally would be seemed very awkward to access, more of a Chinese puzzle to place a medium sized object in and then extract without damaging it. I spoke to a couple of people there who seemed very keen on it ~ both were looking to it as a replacement for current D3s or D4s, both having passed on the D5. One thing it wasn't was a worthy replacement for the old Defender. * It was a preproduction vehicle, didn't appear to have a chassis number visible through the front windscreen, and some of the plastics used to finish various bits looked to have been cut with a blunt hacksaw and spray painted. |

Just as well the seats in the new Defender are leather. With something like that coming towards you, they are going to need to be wipe clean
