All new Petrol engined vehicles sold since July 2018 have needed one, I just missed needing one on my Mini PHEV by a month. They don’t seem to cause the same issues - could it be because there is less particulate from a petrol engine? 2020 D240 1st Edition in Pangea Green with Acorn interior. Now gone - old faithful, no mechanical issues whatsoever ever but the leaks and rattles all over the place won’t be missed! |

I’ve read that GPFs give less problems than DPFs because petrol engine exhausts run hotter. It makes sense but am not sure if it’s true . . . . 2005 Defender 90 TD5

All our petrol engines (head technician at a Alfa-Fiat-Abarth dealer) have one, and until now without problems.
Allmost all today's gpf's are not as 'closed' as a diesel's scr/scrf/ncr/.... And petrol engines have much hotter exhaust gasses, that combined with the fact that a gpf can be consistently regenerated (to a certain level) during fuel cut off makes it a bit less vunerable. Gpf equipped petrols don't have particulate matter sensors either (doesnt have to be monitored with euro6d), at least until the next rule comes along. Watch out with small capacity direct injection petrol engines, pre detonation makes them very vunerable with certain brands. |

Yes, particulate matter / partickles are measured in the euro6d cycle. The direct petrol injection gives lower co2, nox etc, but because the petrol has less time to evaporate, the petrol parts don't always fully burn, a little bit on the inside of the petrol bubble becomes very hot without o2, so doesnt burn but becomes a sort of carbon particle.
A gpf is more 'open' than a dpf and petrol pm's are smaller, so the rules are actually harder on diesel engines. Constant monitoring of these pm's is allso not compulsory in euro6d for petrol engines (it is on diesels). The next rules won't be good for petrol engines probably (if they tighten the pm emissions ,petrol engines are more sensitive to exhaust back pressure than diesel engines) |
