there are lots of calculators on google about what car can tow what caravan, the normal safe assumption is that the caravan should weigh 85% of the tow vehicle weight. In some countries there are legal limits, I'm not sure but in the UK I think its 100%.
as for if the defender will tow it the answer is yes easily, I have recently purchased a swift conqueror (which is a bit heavier than a ranger) and my 90 has no issues towing it, yes its a bit slower off the mark and up hills but other than that not an issue and mine is basically standard. the biggest issue most Def owners have is the tow hook being too high, and the spare wheel getting in the way of the hitch mechanism. Oh and not forgetting you will probably have to sort the tow electrics out to match the caravan If you search caravan on here there is loads of advice on caravanning DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS, I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy |

The 85% rule is a recommendation only, originally I think from the Caravan Club. There's no 100% limit, though. The upper limit is defined by the maximum capacity of the tow vehicle, which in the case of a Defender is generally 3.5 tonnes and is much more than any caravan is going to weigh. With regards the OP's question, there does seem to be a bit of an issue with Puma engines and inlet temperatures in hotter climates. we don't really notice it here in the UK but others in places like parts of Africa have complained of engines going into limp mode under high load/high ambient temperatures. I have a friend in Australia who is very active in the LR scene and also a very keen caravanner. We were discussing the Puma engine and it’s habit of going into limp mode in high temps, high load situations. His view was that no one had yet found a total solution to the problem and that both larger intercoolers and larger radiators didn’t completely fix it.
My own experience of the issue, in 40 plus degree heat, is that using lower gears and letting the engine and thus the fan spin faster, seems to help. The a Puma has a lot of torque and it is tempting to let it slug away at low revs, but I think then the airflow is not enough. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS |
