so being a bit stubborn I wasn't happy to simply take answer from the father in law without a bit of a fight
to drive a car over here legally (yep I knew that's a bit old school but this is I guess only hypothetical) you need a license right? and to get said license for driving a car you need to be 17 right? now if I go to another part of the world and want to drive I have to have a license. so what happens when my niece comes over from the states and wants to drive? she's passed her test and has a license to drive a car but shes only 16. over here you can't drive simply because you're 17 - you have to have a license. see where the argument is going? |

The way to think of it is that you have to be 17 and have a Licence. Darren

Different rules for citizens and visitors/migrants, (the latter of which changes whether they're visiting temporarily or staying long-term) to UK nationals. I think the UK is the same as here in France, (as it falls under the European Driving Licence Area) whereby if you want to drive as a non-French national you have to be 21 and a licence holder from a recognised country, whatever the regs in your home country may be. So you can be 16 WITH a licence and NOT be able to drive or you can be 75 and have driven for 50 years but either have NO licence or have never passed a test, so again, you cannot drive.
